This thread covers the back boiler issue.

As you can see I have such a system but would advise against having one fitted.

You can only have a condensing boiler fitted these days - unless there are unusual circumstances.

The choice is really between a Combi boiler which can heat water instantly, or a free standing 'conventional' boiler that supplies hot water to a tank.

Whilst a combi can do away with the need for a hot water tank and heat water on demand, I personally would still retain a HW tank whatever boiler I chose.

I accept that a combi will be cheaper in that you only heat the water you need, but with a well lagged tank I doubt the savings will be substantial.

Also to get rid of a HW tank will require considerable modification to your plumbing.

The reason I like a HW tank is because I like to be able to have lots of HW when I want, and Combi boilers cannot provide this in winter.

I have a Combi in an Annex and a conventional system and there is no doubt which I prefer. A BG fitter told me that they get loads of calls in the winter complaining that their Combi isn't providing enough HW.
  • thanks Cardew will read up on these threads cheers ma dears!
