Pull ups are really handy for if you are going out somewhere and are still at the stage of lots of accidents, I used normal pants with characters on the front around the house. The best toilet seat for us was one of the padded cushioned ones - our little girl loved them - she was fully potty trained before she was 2. She came out of nappies at night at the same time and rarely has an accident (we found pampers bed mats to be brilliant - they make changing a bed in the middle of the night so much easier)

Got some of the Feel n Learns cheap in Asda - v similar to Huggies and do the job ok. Still seem to v similar to wearing a nappy though - I only use them in situations where an accident would be a nightmare, but am trying to stick to pants as I can see that dd can't really tell / isn't bothered about messing when she wears these even though she's really good about using the potty if wearing pants. My HV did say that pull-ups are too like a nappy, and I can see now that it must be confusing that sometimes it's ok to pee your pants but other times it's not. Have seen a car seat pad in NCT catalogue (6.99) so might invest in that and just go for pants all the way! btw haven't yet found a seat that fits our wooden loo seats, apart from one with built in steps that sits on the pan (MIL bought at a car boot) but dd seems to be quite happy sitting on the big loo seat (I do hold her hands in case she falls in though - lol)!

i bought some reusable nappies to get my son to feel what was happening...he's 2 1/2, but know he already knows that he does not like the reusables, as he feels wet, so throws a right strop. if i can get the nappies ready, without him seeing, it's ok, otherwise tantrum.

also tried pants with bob the builder, thomas etc, but he has no idea he's wed in them, and denies it. will try with the new feel and learn ones, they have spiderman on the front today....

I agree with lots of what has been said on this thread - if the pull ups feel like a nappy then the toddler will use them like a nappy. I also think it's best to wait until the child takes the initiative- leave the potty around etc but eventually the child will ask to use it and you save yourself lots of stress and potty training is really quick and easy. Also, I stopped night time nappies as soon as my son was dry in the day - once again I think that using a nappy is like giving permission to use it. He has never wet the bed but I do know all kids are different. One of my friends managed to toilet train two of hers really quickly, day and night with no fuss but the third child didn't take to it at all and still wears nappies at night.
I bought a book on potty training from the NCT called NCT book of Potty Training by Heather Welford that looks at the whole issue in detail. I would recommend it if it's still in print.
    Good luck.
