I just had a discussion on AVForums on this very subject, since I am having a few quality issues when transferring vhs to dvd. The general opinion there was to stick to a good dvd hard drive recorder, and the best separate video you can find. I asked because I'm as much a dumbo as anyone else on the subect, and that was the advice repeated by a number of respondents.

a reduction in fizz and colourbleed on the finished DVD
