someone opening late mums post....

i dont know where to post this but hope someone will help,......my mum died two years ago and when we sorted her house out we arranged with post office to re-direct mail - we paid a fee for 1 year which we thought would be enough.....
anyway, this week we have found out the new tenants have been opening mums mail - this came to light as they tried to cash an old insurance maturity we didnt know mum had....because it was payee only she brought it down to my sisters saying she had opened the letter by error (the letter had all identifying bits torn off) and her kids had got hold of it and torn it....funny how they just tear the important bits.....
it has now come to light though that numerous letters and things have been posted there so, we dont know what she has had of mums and it is annoying me...i dont want her to get away with it but there is no prove...the postman is a friend and he has promised to post anything else here but, i cant see what could come this length of time now as we informed everybody.....
i would love to go knock on the door and sort her out, but, have been told this will end up in me getting done, which cos she is a smack head im sure will be true....
any ideas of a letter i could write warning her? an official type of letter that might just scare the beejees up her?
thanks for letting me vent....

This seems to be more than just a matter of someone opening the post.
Have you thought about reporting this to the police?0 -
we phoned the police and they said there is nothing we can do as we have no proof....thanks though...0

If you have no proof-how do you know they tried to cash it?0

If I were you, I would contact the company involved and ask them for copies of the docs that were signed to get the payout - I am assuming that the payment wasn't sent unsolicited? And then, I would get down to the police station and ask to speak to someone who can deal with your problem.
It's simply not good enough for them to say that you don't have proof, but you will probably have to be quite assertive.
It is fortunate that, in the meantime, you have the postie onside, to make sure they don't get their grubby mitts on anything else.0 -
we know she tried to cash the money as she took the cheque to the post office and was told it was account payee only, we know this because a neighbour was behind her when she was arguing about it with the post office worker.....then, she came down to my sisters and said this has come, but, all name/address/ d.o.b, etc had been taken off the letter, which she said her kids had got hold of....the cheque only had mums name on and anyone could be that person....nothing needed to be signed to get the cheque as it was a normal cheque you pay in your bank account, so, they wouldve been able to cash it if it wasnt payee only....
once we got the letter off her, hence, we knew about the money due, she is playing numb and wont admit she tried of course, but we know better....wheels are in motion now for mums grandkids to get the money when they are older so that bits ok....
we cant proove anything but it just annoys me that dirty lowlife try con a dead woman.....and what else has she had? has she bought goods in mums name, etc....
i so want to scare her.....warn her, or even kill her lol....so mad....0 -
Well,if you insisted on reporting it to the police, and gave your neighbours name and address, the Police could identify her as a witness.Even if she wont give evidence-no doubt the postal worker will, and may be more credible too-that is enough proof presumably.
Though,i am not sure what the offence is.Maybe its attempted fraud?? Speak to the bank who issued the cheque they could tell you .
Do not write or communicate with this person yourself.0 -
weve tried that - the police just said they cant do anything as no proof and wouldnt discuss it further.....am gonna find a way though to warn her...thanks for letting me vent though...0

Sorry, but how can the Police tell you there is no proof, you are telling them there is?If they mentioned "hearsay" evidence, that is not relevant here.People get very confused with what hearsay is.
Someone has tried to cash a cheque that doesn't belong to them,as far as we know. They had this interaction with a Postal worker. How easy a crime is that to detect? They only have to get a statement from the postal worker(of course it depends what she/he says).
The police can't refuse to discuss a crime.I am beginning to think this is not quite as straightforward as you say.0 -
thanks hollydays - i will have another go and see what they say...but, if they arent willing to do anything will think of a way myself...thanks so much0

Don't take this the wrong way, but if I was still getting post from the previous tenants after 2 years, then I too would open the mail. I'm not saying that I would do anything as dishonest as trying to cash a cheque though- just a nosey. I would only do it though if I didn't have a forwarding addy.July Win: Nokia 58000
