Water rates & council tax band

Has anybody thought about what happens when you win a Council Tax Re-Banding :j from D to C ,does that mean that my Water Rates were also incorrect ,and if so can i reclaim for the last 15 years . Would welcome your views..

Loads of people have thought the same as you. Unfortunately Council Tax has nothing to do with water charges at all.

You could be in a Band H and get downgraded to Band A and your water charges will remain the same.

If you are not on a meter, your charges are based on your Rateable Value(RV)
This was the system for 'local taxes' in place prior to 1990 and was based on the notional rent your property could command, and not the value of your property.

There is simply no mechanisim available to adjust the RV.

So you have no way to claim anything I am afraid.

I work for our local water authority & the above is all correct. Any property built after 1990 was automatically metered as the community charge was charged per person not per property. Most water companies will now offer a switchback guarantee so if you opt to have a meter fitted & then it isn't beneficial you can revert back to RV within 12 months. HTH
