Can I stop the payment?

Hi all

I've recently become debt-free and finally had the courage to really look at all my credit card statements - and I've had a regular payment for £14.95 a month going to "high street max" - I have no idea when or if I signed up for this - and I want to stop the payment. High Street Max will not answer my requests for my log in details so I can't check when I allegedly signed up. I'd like to stop the payments and reclaim the money or the vouchers, or whatever this is - I don't even know what the company is!

Can I request my credit card company stop paying this?

Thanks for your help.

I think this payment is known as a CPA (Continuous Payment Authority), and they are a pain in the neck.

No, the Credit Card company cannot cancel them, you will have to go to "High Street Max" and ask them to cancel it.

You may actually then find out what you are paying £14.95 per month for. With respect, I am a little surprised that you have been paying this sum out with no idea what you are spending your money on.

    Good Luck with it.

Ah yes, this is what the thread above is about? OK, so I have to be patient and wait for them to get back in touch. Methinks that may take some time.

Yes, you're right - I should have known that that amount was being paid each month but, as I said, I've only just worked up the courage to look closely at the statements rather than just making my payments each month. Believe me, I will be more attentive to all statements from now on.

    Thanks for your reply.

How do I cancel my membership?

Cancelling your membership to this programme has been made easy by the introduction of a button on the membership status page of the www.highstreetmax.com website. This button gives all members who wish to cancel the ability to do so immediately.
Cancelling members may also call the UK based customer service centre on 0845 672 2002 (Call are charged at local rate). A member of the team is on hand to deal with member requests between the hours of 9:00 to 5:00 Monday to Friday and is always happy to help. Or if you require immediate assistance you may call the automated system on 0845 026 1100 24 hours a day to cancel .

If the company doesn't get back to you or they don't cancel the subscription then contact the credit card company. NickX mentioned they can't cancel CPAs but they can help as long as you've tried to sort it yourself.

If it's a Visa card then they'll be able to send off a request for it to be cancelled (you have to make a genuine attempt to cancel it yourself though). Not sure about Mastercard but there could be a similar sort of thing.

You mention 'high street max'... I presume it's highstreetmax.com? If they don't reply to you then there's a telephone number on the 'Contact us' page, the link is at the bottom of the main home page.

There's a link to the FAQs aswell which lists the information they ask for to provide the log in details, not sure if you'd seen it.

There's also an address on the contact us section. If the worst comes to the worst and they completely ignore you then you could send a recorded letter to that address and keep the proof of postage and a copy of the letter etc to help with any dispute raised with the credit card company.

Thanks for your replies guys. Sadly, I do not have my member id number - another thing I've asked for from HighStreetMax.com but have received no reply. I've also lodged a dispute with my credit card co who will investigate it - having googled it I came across a site where lots of people seemed to have had the same problem - with High Street Max and a company called VPRewards - and are having trouble cancelling them. Fingers crossed I'll get my money back!

The quickest way is to report your card lost - don't tell them about the CPA, just pretend you've lost your card. You'll have your current one stopped and a new one issued. :)

Bit of a cheats way round it but the quickest and easiest. :)

Sorry, but I really don't think this will work, they will just take the money from the new card and move the CPA over.

The OP needs to ask "HighStreetMax" to cancel the CPA. If they continue to take funds from his card, then he can dispute them with the Credit Card company as being fraudulent, but as others have said he needs to have made the initial effort to cancel the CPA.

    erm ... I'm a she!!
well, I'm actually going to be closing the card soon anyway, but wanted to get the money back before I did so ... anyway, we'll see what the bank says when they've investigated it.
The most annoying thing is that one of the payments actually made me go over my limit (pre-debt free days) a couple of times - costing me £12 a time ...
