Price for stair and hall carpet

Just been down to Carpetright cos they've got a sale on. For my hall (5m x 1.3m) and stairs they've quoted me as follows:

£207.84 Carpet 5m x 4m @ £12.99 sq m
£83.58 Gripper strips 42m
£159.80 Underlay 20sq m
£23.97 3 x door bars
£109.00 deliver and fit
£584.19

Would it be cheaper for me to get the other bits myself and pay a carpet fitter privately? It's gonna be a house warming gift from ex's mum - don't wanna rip her off.

If you've already got gripper strips then you won't need them again.

You don't need door bars again if you already have them, or if you need them, you can buyer them cheaper yourself and they are easy to fit.

If your underlay isn't too bad, then again, you can reuse what you already have.

That would leave just the carpet and delivery/fitting to pay for which is a lot better at £316.84! :)

Thanks shellsuit - the stairs and hall are completely bare floors so I need the lot sadly. I did nip into B&Q and bought 4 x door bars for £16.00, which is what got me thinking....

Have a look at b&q's website (www.diy.com) and see how much it would be for underlay.

I remember getting a quote for from Carpet Right a couple of years ago and they practically told me I must get the dearer underlay, even though I told them I only wanted the cheapest as I rent my house so didn't want to pay extra for my LL to benefit from it in the future.

I didn't go with them in the end but check back with them on the difference in prices of their underlay.

we got ourstair carpet AND fitting for £90!! i know i couldn't believe it either-i got the number from the local ads (plus i know someone who had used him and recommended him). He came to the house with some samples and voila!

we dont have much hall, so it really was just stairs and a piece on top and a piece at the bottom of the stairs

i always advocate local people now for everything. check your local paper-should find carpet fitters.

Thanks for the advice, I've had a look on the B&Q website, and my mate knows a carpet fitter. Think I'm leaning towards just getting the carpet before the sale ends for now :D

    .

I work for a local flooring company in Liverpool and am always shocked at the excessive prices which National retailers manage to charge and get away with.
I would strongly suggest going to a local carpet warehouse and getting them to price up the job.

Above I have priced up (in red) what I would charge on a similar £12.99m² that Carpetright have on sale. And to be honest I have overpriced these so you should be able to find it far cheaper.

    Ask yourself a few things:
Why should you have to pay for delivery when the carpet is coming to be fitted??
Why should I pay £2 m² for gripper that costs 25p
Why should I pay for underlay on stairs when about 4m² are not being used on the risers. In reality the underlay will be working out about £9.99 m²

    Hope this helps

I found a carpet I liked at carpet right, borrowed a sample and took it into my local independent. They did the job for two thirds of the price that CR had quoted.

BTW don't be fooled by CR's 'sale'.... they ALWAYS have a sale on. They artificially inflate the prices so they can reduce them to a price which is still dearer than you can find elsewhere. Shop around!

Another tip is, if you live in a failry affluent area but are not too far from a less well off area, try having a mooch around there - they will be hungrier for business and more likely to give you a good price.

  • I got the following carpets for my whole house;
    Lounge 16' x 12'
    Hall (up) 5' x 4'
    Hall (lower) 7' x 4'
    Bed 1 15' x 8'
    Bed 2 13' x 9'

    All carpets same
    Supply including underlay, gripper £550
    Fit £170
    Go for a local independent
    Get a local carpet fitter
    baldly going on...

Yes, same here, got for a local independant from the local paper. I paid £138 for hall, stairs and landing carpet. Which is almost what they are charing you for fitting and delivery!!
