assuming the electricity and phone bills are in the tenants name (and not yours) then its nothing for you to worry about. its the tenants who the utilities companies will be after.
nothing to do with the deposit you have.0 -
how long have they been tenants ?0

They have been tenants for six months. I'm just worried they will leave with unpaid bills, and I will have to foot the bill.0

As others have said, if the bills are in their names, it has nothing to do with you. Make sure you get forwarding addresses for each tenants, read the meters together, and write the numbers down.
Also very useful if they give you the name of their utility suppliers, and their acc numbers, to make it easier for the next person to start an account. It's a huge pain to move in and not know who is supplying the electricity & it takes a lot of phone calls to sort it out!0 -

Why would they? If they are in their name then the utility companies will go after the tenants.
You can't keep hold of their deposit because of your worry over bills... thats not fair.0 -
The rules for how/when you can hold back any deposit would be in the rules of the scheme holding your tenants' deposit.
As others have said though, whether or not they have paid their bills is of none of your concern if the bills are in their names.
The point about listing who the suppliers are for the next tenant is a good one.0 -
so which deposit scheme did you lodge your tenants deposit with ?0

we were all amateur landlords once, and ignorance is no excuse for not fullfilling your legal obligations, but at least qwerty is trying to do the right thing by his tenants.0
