Cleaning ties

I've never tried cleaning a whole tie in this way but I've done spot cleaning and it's worked a treat.
Put stardrops in a bucket with lukewarm water (probably a teaspoon in a pint of water - i.e. stronger than normal dilution). Put in a microfibre cloth and wring out as much water as possible. Dab or gently wipe the stain/whole tie section by section - you may need to do this several times. If the tie gets too damp wrap in a towel and press down to remove excess moisture.
Leave to air dry.0 -
You can prevent a tie from buckling in the wash, run a line of tacking all the way round the edges, using fairly short stitches...always worked for me

What's a tie??? The last time I wore one was on my wedding day 16 years ago. And the less said about that, the better  )

Donkey years ago when I had ties and washed them I did it by hand washing by winding them around a bottle to keep it in shape.0

I'd just use a damp cloth on it rather than immerse the whole tie in water. Silk ties can get misshapen very easily, so it's worth investing in a few machine washable ones for work. I did once manage to salvage an accidentally-machine-washed silk tie by stretching it over a ruler inserted inside to iron it.0

Sadly I've never had success with this one. DH rarely wears a tie these days, but in the days when he had to wear one for school he was always getting marks on his ties - and I was always in the dog house for ruining them.Resolution:

I have handwashed DH's ties in the past and drip dried. Some results but I am afraid some failures!

I've used a drop of Gin on a piece of plain cloth or white kitchen paper on small spots for silk ties. Don't get it too wet though!!Doing a boring job but thinking of the money!!0

This is the method that I use and it always works, both for hand washing and in the machine (I take the futher precaution of putting the tacked tie in a net bag if I do a machine wash, to prevent it wrapping around all the other washing).
If you decide that you need to iron the tie cut a piece of card and slip it inside the tie to prevent the seam from showing on the front. Try not to make the edges flat.0 -
no matter what i do i tend to wreck them. i dont bother now - just try to keep them clean for ages :-)0
