Oh gosh, does this take me back! As a child I used to regularly be given a spoonful of malt extract. My sister hated it, but I loved it - haven't tasted it for years, so I'll be trying Holland and Barrett at the w/e!

What memories - I can remember eating this by the spoonful straight from the jar as a child. Mum always bought it in Boots but it was a long time ago! Haven't eaten it since I was a child but will also be looking out for it, might even try making a malt loaf too.

Can anyone help? I have recently replaced my breadmaker and there is a recipe for malt loaf in the recipe leaflet, but I am unable to source a jar of malt extract. Can anyone out there suggest where I can buy some? I live near Sunderland.

I bought one in Holland and Barrett on Monday it is £1.45 a jar I had to ask where it was though! Hope this helps

I can remember when we used to be given a spoonful every morning before milk at primary school plus one of those cod-liver oil capsules. This was just after ww2.Each classroom had one spoon betweent the 38-40 odd children in the class My class had 42.We all had to line up in alphabetical order for our spoon ful of Virol (malt extract)Luckily my surname began with a 'B', so I think there was only two others in front of me .God help the poor kid's whose surname came toward the end.It was a great way to spread childhood illnesses. Not a lot of H&S in those days. It never occured to the teacher that we shouldn't all share the same spoon !! But we all survived, although one year most of my class all had measles one after the other ,not many immunisations either .
Oh the joys of a small school on the outskirts of London (Blackheath), but a great impovement on the one in Leyton (East London) where there were three toilets for the whole school, as Herr Hitler's men had flattened the rest of them, jettisoning their bombs.
Infants school loo's were obviously well known as places of insurrection to the Luftwaffe:rotfl: :rotfl::rotfl: :rotfl:

  • I have just bought a jar of this and this brings back many memories, my mother used to give it to me everyday on a spoon, but what does it do for you, it still remains the same smell and taste, anyone have any ideas as to what it will do for me.
    Thanks

Its a sort of build up thing, we had one tablespoon full every friday night, sometimes Virol, sometimes cod liver oil and malt _pale_ supposed to be good for you, doesnt it have lots of vitamins?

OT, I used to get a (very small) glass of Wincarnis tonic wine when I was ill too, but I loved that! dont know if its still around :)
