We had a cheque coming out on Tuesday which would have meant we were overdrawn so my OH paid £180 into our account at 12 midday on Tuesday to cover the cheque. Looked on the online banking only to find they have moved the cash deposit to Wednesday and charged us £30 for going overdrawn. We have the reciept to prove we paid in on Tuesday to cover the cheque, can they do this? or technically were we to late because the cheque had already been cleared through his account before we paid the cash in? we only went overdrawn by £32. OH was supposed to pay it in monday but he is a driver and was caught in traffic jam so never got back in time for the bank so know it is partly our own fault, but to move the cash deposit one day forward to get their charges is surely not on.

If he paid it in over the counter it should have credited same day. But if he paid via an ATM either outside or inside the Bank .... then you need to check T&Cs to see what they say about credit - it's likely to be next working day. Unlikely they've 'moved' it ... why would they do that?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

Was there a cheque paid in on the same slip? If so, that might explain why the cash wasn't credited until the next day.0

Which bank and what type of account is it?
Many banks require sufficient funds to be available the day before a debit is paid. So even if the cash was credited the same day it could still be too late.

I've been 'caught out' by this, however, I have phoned the bank to explain that as far as I was aware I was putting money in 'in time' and they've always refunded any charges as a gesture of goodwill  It may be worth your while checking this out.0 -

Practically the exact same thing happened to me with NatWest: Paid cash in first thing in the morning the day before a DD went out. Three days later, my internet banking ministatement mysteriously showed my direct debit going out on its expected date and my cash credited the day later. Was charged £28 at the end of the month for this. Telephone banking did not help at all, so I got put through to the branch and demanded to see a member of staff. They told me that unless I could produce my deposit slip they would not reverse the charge. Luckily I still had the receipt...0 -
I have done this many times (paid in cash on the day that funds were leaving my account). It has never been an issue, far less a problem. I bank with Smile, and suggest that you move your business there. While not perfect, they are good in situations like this (and many others).0

efallai,
presumably (since you had the receipt) they had no choice but to apologise, remove the charge, and give you "something for your trouble".
But what reason did they give for their "mistake"? I would have thought that if they had left it to their computer systems the change in date would not have occurred. So did they change it manually?Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.

I bet they did it as as gesture of goodwill.
Almost no banks allow same day credits.
Don't get into the habit of same day credits, unless you want to get charged through the nose.0 -
Never move to Smile. The Worst Bank in the UK. They don't resolve problems and have a system that is outdated. You can also be held on the telephone for minutes before someone answers.
First Direct are much better. I would move there. First Class Service from First Direct.0 -
Halifax credit the same day ..it's instant...I can deposit in branch and then be home 10 mins later log on and its there0
