Has anyone heard of MaxTalk?

Hi, have received a phone call from a company called MaxTalk offering me unlimited day/evening/weekend national and local calls, plus line rental for £17.14 (inc. VAT). They don't offer broadband at the moment, but are trying to launch this. I can't find anything on the net and the customer services number I call is constantly engaged. The rep was quite pushy and I could hardly understand his foreign accent, but just wondered if anyone else had received such a call and if, in fact, they were a genuine company.
Apparently they are ringing all customers with line rental through BT (even though I'm with Talktalk).
I'm going to take a look through all these threads as it looks like I could get a better deal with somebody else. I'm not tied into a contract so easy enough to change (she says!).
I currently have Talktalk3 and pay aprox £35/month. Unfortunately I live in area which doesn't qualify for their free b/band so £10 of this is for b/band. I found their customer services to be excellent until I signed up for the talk3 package and have had really slow b/band speeds throughout the whole contract, so quite keen to change.
Thanks to anyone who is able to respond.

Thanks for the info. Haven't had time to sit and read through all the posts about home phones yet, but will make sure I do. Can't believe there's so many good deals out there, and so many folk with lots of know how.
Thanks again.0 -
Yeah, got the same fast gabblegabble treatment, offering free evening and weekend calls for £13.09 per month, daytime calls at flat rate of 2.92 pence per min. , no connection charge. Customer Service number 08451746188. Contact was "Roy" , ID MN002. Promised an "introduction pack" within four working days. Deeply sceptical and mrcautious on this, but, well, it's new, maybe a winner. WTS - watch this space!0

If you gave your phone number (or if you're in the book and Roy could ascertain it easily), you may well find that you've 'agreed' to receive a bit more than an 'information pack' in the post. I hope not, but all the signs are there.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
My mother in her seventies and nursing my father who has had a serious heart problem phoned me in a real spin today. She was rung by an operative of "Maxtalk". No address or anything, but left a phone number. Unbelievably, he managed to get her bank details out of her, sort code and account number. She knew she should not have given them to him and is obviously upset about it. She wanted me to speak to him, he had promised to call me and she gave him her number. They left the same customer support number 0845 174 6188. I have called them and the person who answered the phone did not even know who the company was, would not give out the head office name, or her address or anything, and said it was a fault reporting line. I am seriously suspicious and I have told my mother to talk to the bank. I am going to see if I can report them to someone.0

Getting you £'s and your p's mixed up there!
£10.50p (note no p as you've used the £, as the p would be ten & half pence).
5.95p = just under six pence.
You only use one currency symbol at a time.
£10.50
£5.95
Total: £16.45It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

Yeah, but for £10.50 you can get line rental, caller display and evening and weekend calls and you can get daytime calls for 5p per call, no matter how long you chat away for. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc...
