    You as a former loyal customer abandoned Staples in their hour of need so all this is your fault so stop trying to shift the blame on to MSE. Take a chill pill dude and learn to move on.

    Ho ho ho !

    I held a little mirror up to the MSE forum and look what happened.

    Of course every time any poster dares to tell a few home truths there is a wail of indignation, insult and offence ;

    Perhaps MSE should be reported to the Trading Standards. Because it is certainly not what is says on the packet;

    * FALLACY: MSE-ers are taking revenge on big companies who screw them for profits.
    * REALITY: At some point in the distant, distant past MSE-ers may have been about not being ripped off by unscrupulous big companies who operated in a virtual monopoly and would hardly notice. But MSE is simply about getting a bargain or a freebie from any company whether they can afford to be descended on by the locusts or not. Little known orthapedic bed companies, family run food businesses, companies on the prepice of bankruptcy. MSE-ers simply do not care, or give a monkeys. As long as somebody, somewhere can be manipulated or defrauded of a free gift or bargain, MSE-ers will take it, and the company be dammed. They don’t have a clue of the vast expense in peoples time and labour sending bottles of wine to liars is, and they don’t care.

    * FALLACY: MSE-ers are revenge on companies who are charging extortionate mark-ups and profit margins by getting themselves a bargain ?
    * REALITY: Mark Ups and Profit Margins ? MSE-ers need to take another look in that mirror. Some MSE-ers are ripping off their fellow consumers way more than the shops they point the finger at. Take a look at Ebay any time MSE-ers find a bargain that does not need to be frozen or refrigerated. There is little sharing and caring about bargains, especially say a loss leader from Argos, when MSE-ers are buying as many as humanly possible, then bunging them all on Ebay at a profit of 100% to 1000%. Anyone look at Ebay around the time of the Little Me Aroma Bears or Oral B Toothbrushes feeding frenzy ?

    * FALLACY: MSE-ers are only taking advantage of legal opportunities and loopholes.
    * REALITY: Oh yeah ? Posing as a business. Posing as disabled. And how many times have we seen the following.

    “ …. Gave hubby three of them and told him take it back at lunchtime to three different branches of Boots, ask for a refund and if they ask him for the reciept pretend he lost it. Put the money in the Christmas jar. Tee hee ...”

    “ … Tried that thing about exchanging the points for Gift Vouchers. First time I got a supervisor who told me it clearly stated in the Terms & Conditions that this was against the rules. Went back a bit later and found a student. Result ! Going to the other branch at lunchtime … ”

    As for some of the posts on the Benefits Boards …. SICK is the only word.

    * FALLACY: Companies are charging MSE-ers exorbitant profits and mark ups.
    * REALITY: Most MSE-ers don’t have a clue, but would rather believe than know. It helps in the self justification.

    The MSE-er understading of ecomomics is something like this;

    X (Price of Goods In Shop) - Y (Price of Raw Material To Manufacturer) = Z (Extortionate Profit).

    Unfortunately the MSE-er equation fails to take into account A (Factory Power Costs), B(Factory Labour Costs), C … to …. W (Electrical Superstore Council Tax)

    The basic rule of thumb seems to be;

    “ … 36 for a bag of Walkers ? Hubby met a bloke in the pub who works on a farm. Told him they sell Walkers a big potato for 1p each. Apparently you can get three bags from a potato that size. Grrrrrr !!!!. No wonder they can afford Gary Linker for the ads …. ”

    The MSE-ers basic understanding of profits and mark ups can be illustrated as such;

    MSE-er 1 - Went to Aldi today. On special they are selling a 14 inch black and white TV (HongKongTron brand) for £29.99.

    MSE-er 2 - £29.99 ??? I bought a 32” Sony Widescreen DVB TV for £299.99 from Currys last week. If Aldi can sell TVs for £29.99 it just shows how Currys and Argos are ripping us off. Grrrr !!!!!

    Reap what you sow.
  • What's all the fuss about? I've got old Staples catalogues here with "free gifts with your first order " - there's something every month -just about.
    Oct.'04 - " Free digital radio with remote control" - came with 2 spkrs.
    Nov.'04 - " Free surround sound system " - 15w subwoofer + 4x 3w surround spkrs. Mains powered active system - ideal for a computer user who doesn't want to raise the roof.
    Let's be honest about one thing , what these offers represent is the large scale movement of jobs and manufacturing to China wher labour is dirt cheap, and so the cost of said items is bug ger all - easily covered by the small order postage of ~£3. In fact if you order by phone you might get a choice of free gift if they've got some left over from previous months - this is what Viking do with their promotions.

    Hello Julieblake

    “ … It's a very sad world when there are ppl like you who doubt everyones intentions … ”

    Oh dear, upset you have I with my little reality check have I ? You almost appear to be taking it quite personally.

    The intentions of MSE-ers ?

    No doubt Hipp Baby Food only imagine that the intention of callers is to use £10 worth of money off vouchers on their products only for their wonderful new baby. No they don’t imagine that it is the intention of some of the callers, using information not provided to them, to use these vouchers to exploit a loophole in Tescos and so therefore they will waste time, effort and labour costs, not to mention product costs, to send those packs out.

    No doubt Bensons imagine that the intention of customers, when it is clear a serious pricing error has been made, ordering dozens of DVD box sets because they have the intention of keeping them, rather than say selling them on their Ebay business. No doubt they will lose a vast amount of money in selling the items below cost, and pay somebody to send them out.

    No doubt the Dexon think that the intention of somebody who orders “the usual 69p ring sixer” that they just enjoy measuring their fingers. A lot.

    Oh yes, it is quite clear what some MSE-ers intentions are. Just read the threads.

    Hello Panther

    “ … You as a former loyal customer abandoned Staples in their hour of need … “

    Essentially, with slashed early and late opening hours, it became timewise impossible to drive nine miles to the store in the as in the new opening hours the area is gridlocked, and manage a business where people are expected to be on call and immediately available during “office hours”.

    Hello bbford

    As you say Dadada, Staples were in financial trouble already - Mse's didn't cause this to happen! I do not think it is a mistake that a company as big as this would promote a free gift without a minimum spend. They obviously are reaching out to a bigger market.

    Yes they are reaching out to Business Customers Only.

    Hello upallnight.

    " .... let's be honest about one thing , what these offers represent is the large scale movement of jobs and manufacturing to China wher labour is dirt cheap ... "

    Learning Chinese might be a good idea, and looking at how Eastern Europeans live. We have long lives ahead of us.

    Hello dadada - I appear to have taken it personally? A little english lesson here for you - if I had taken it personally, I would have said "doubting MY intentions. Am I mis-reading what I wrote? Did I not write "doubting EVERYONES intentions"??? Everyone being plural and being all the people you are slating on here.

    dadada, why the concern for Staples???. When you gave up on your local suppliers to be embraced by Staples did you loose any sleep over the small independents who went to the wall putting people on the dole, I dought it. When Staples did there big expansion thing there policy was to grow big at the expense of any company smaller than themselves. They only bought out Office World to grab it`s market share and close a competitor down, they didn`t give a damm about the people losing there jobs at both Office World or their suppliers. How many suppliers have been forced to pare costs to the bone then lost the work to far eastern suppliers?. I`ve been a customer of Staples for quite some years now and still have an old loyalty card somewhere,this I prefered as it was an across the board discount. Unlike yourself I still buy from them so the screwdriver set is some reward for my continued loyalty. As for your rant about the forum, a mirror of the forum it may be but it`s a flawed mirror. If you turn it on yourself are you such a paragon of rectitude, is any man!.

    When you have hung around the site for a little longer you will realise that this conversation comes and goes around regularly...nothing new has been said. We all have different ideas and values and being so judgemental and taking the moral high ground so vociferously will not change matters.

  • What a fantastic little sub post this has become although I am slightly confused as to the "trouble" that Staples are in:

    "Staples have sacked staff.
    Staples have closed stores
    Staples have slashed product lines, perhaps putting suppliers out of business.
    Staples have merged with Office World, closing more stores, sacking more staff."

    When DADADA mentions this above is he blaming MSE's for the this or the evil cut and thrust of business?

    Maybe they were once in trouble about 5 years ago but as far as I can see they aint any more:

    Martket Cap: $16.4bn
    Share price trading at all-time highs
    Profits last full year: $708m
    Profits to Jan 02: $265m
    % rise in profits: 268%

    No. of employees in 2002: 29,909
    No. of employees in 2005: 33,577

    Net net an increase in jobs.

    Now does this sound like a struggling company or one with good management who knows how to efficiently cut costs in whilst keeping the revenue coming in.

    Also, do you know honestly think that when companies put these offers on, they are not intelligent enough to work out how much it may cost them. If not, they should not be in business in the first place. Companies can easily change the T&C of offers to be more cost effective as I'm sure you already know.

    Blimey hasn’t dadada stirred up a bit of a hornets nest !

    Is he just playing Devil’s Advocate, is he completely serious or does he just want people to react (which they have)?

    It doesn’t really matter what his intentions are, dadada has made some very serious and thoughtful comments.

    I use the site to find genuine bargains for my personal use and not as a source for generating income from places like Ebay.

    When Dell were selling colour printers for £10 I only bought one even though Dell could ‘afford’ to sell me 10, 15 or even 20 printers.

    I think what is starting to be lost is the spirit of being an MSEr; getting bargain products that we will use for ourselves or finding useful snippets of information or items for friends and family.

    I’ve no doubt that there are a significant number of MSErs who are only using the site to grab as much as they can for as little as they can, without regard to anyone else, as long as they can make money out of it.

    I also think that the vast majority of MSErs are decent, honest people using the information on the site in the spirit that it was intended.

    So don’t get irate with dadada (or me), if you are using the site ‘correctly’ don’t worry about what anyone else says or posts in the forum – you know if you are being honest or not.
