I have some HM tomato chutney that I was given - made last November - that I don't think will get used as no-one here is really into tomatoes.
I know someone who will use it, but don't want to pass it on if it's already past it's best.
What sort of lifespan would something like this have?

Last November is pretty recent in chutney life. I've had damson chutney a good 3 years and it is always fine. Two of the main ingredients are vinegar and sugar both of which are preservatives.1 -
Thanks

3 years  it's still maturing at that ageSeriously, it'll last for ages. Put it in the fridge if you're concerned - that'll help it keep.

the reason people used to make chutneys in the old days was to preserve fruit and veg until the next years harvest. you're not meant to eat them until they are at least a few months old, so don't worry that it's too old.weaving through the chaos...0

I'm still eating apple chutney I made in 2002  - I do keep it in the fridge once it's opened though.:wave:0

One it's open then be careful not to contaminate it with butter/dirty spoon etc.1

Sorry to revive an old thread but I have a Chutney worry.:D
I made some green tomato chutney a few months back, and I understand that the sealed jars will last years,
But how long does it last in the fridge once opened?“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
Just jumping on the bandwagon here - but anyone who doesn't like tomatoes shouldn't be put off tomato chutney.
I made some green tomato chutney this year (my first attempt) because there was a glut of green tomatoes and I didn't want them to go to waste!
I HATE tomatoes, but I love my chutney!! It doesn't taste of tomatoes at all - and as they are cut up and mushed, you can't even tell that it was once a tomato!!!Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??:mad:Debt Free as of September 2011 :jSealed Pot 2009 number 334 - £100 Saved! yey!!Sealed Pot 2010 number 334 - £116.51 Saved! Chutney doesn't need refrigerating. It will last at least 3 months after opening.0
