Broadband keeps dropping connection

We have a 1MB broadband deal with tiscali and it keeps dropping it's connection or running extremely slowly.

The only thing that will restore the connection is if I turn my PC off and back on again, the connection then runs fine. I tried disconnecting all the other phones on the line and that doesn't make any difference. Also, I've had a look to see if any other software like anti-virus definition updates are running but can't find anything.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what could be the problem or what I could do about it?

Thanks

What sort of modem are you using? I had the same problem until recently and it was very frustrating. At the time I was using the USB modem that was provided by my broadband supplier and the line would drop out every few minutes. Like you I thought that it might be a fault with my line or broadband service and made numerous phone calls to BT and Orange without success, took out all my other lines etc. In the end all I had to do was to replace it with an ethernet broadband modem (Thomson Speedtouch v510) which cost me around a tenner on Ebay.

Problem solved! Not dropped out once since.

Not sure if this is the cause of your problem but worth a try.

Personally I'd ring Tiscali and ask for your MAC code and change your ISP, they are numerous threads about how poor their service is. That would be what I would see as the problem.
Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.

    Thanks for the responses.

I like the idea of changing the modem to a different type. I've heard of someone else having a problem with their usb modem. I'm still using the usb modem that tiscali sent me when I joined up.

I don't understand how it can be a fault with tiscali as it reconnects straight away when I switch my pc off and back on. Is there something i'm missing?

It may be that the Tiscali installation software that you have presumably installed causes the disconnections. Use a router which should maintain a connection 24/7. No ISP software needs to be installed for any ISP, if you connect using a router. Leaving Tiscali is a brilliant idea though!

When my BlueYonder was dropping, it was also fixed by changing the modem.
If you can, I also recommend using the ethernet connection rather than the USB.

I've also found that It will reconnect straight away after unplugging and then plugging the usb connection back in on my modem, so I don't have to switch my pc off and back on.

A friend of mine has lent me a different usb modem to try.

Does anyone know if it's just a case of installing the drivers for the new usb modem and then plugging it in, or are there other settings that need changing?

If this makes no difference then I think I'll try a ethernet modem or router.

Tiscali are changing customers over to LLU and some are having problems .
Pointless moving ISP if its your problem and you are only taking the problem to another ISP .
USB Broadband Modems are a known problem .Their is a guide to the light flases and what faults on Tiscali Help page also use the Tiscali forums Broadband help describe the problem often the Tiscali Tech support guys intervene and may post you out a new modem Worth a try anyway .
    Remove old modem software .
Install new modem software then plug modem in and re enter your ISP and log in details .
