Thank you for using the not-automated search function.... (takes longer, but gives similar results)

MSE post 10928639 - (Alledgedly) the unlock code for an E900.

MSE post 8111351 - Free software for unlocking at home by cable.

[FONT=&quot]I wouldnt use the first method in the above post as it can reset your IMEI number and make the phone a paperweight.

I am going to Canada for a wedding next month. I have an Orange PAYG phone (Sony Ericsson t610) which I took to New York in the Spring. Although it says on the Orange website it will work in New York, it didn't. I just got No Signal message all the time. So this time I phoned Orange to ask if it would work in Canada (Calgary actually) and they said THEY DIDN'T KNOW. They said I would just have to go there and try it and see. Lot of use that was.

The Travel Company I am going with has sent me a special offer voucher for a Free International Sim card which is says will work in Canada and I only need to load it up with £15 calls. The thing is it needs to work on an unlocked phone. Orange no longer support the t610 and will not unlock it for me.

How much should I expect to pay to get my Orange phone unlocked and will that affect how it works in the UK?

Take it to a Pro unlocking shop and they will charge you around £10-£15, it will not effect the way it works in the U.K

the problem is the supported phone bands not the unlocking etc. check which bands a t610 supports and then the bands used where you are travelling to, there is your problem.

Sony Ericsson t610 is a tri-band phone - supports 900/1800/1900Mhz. The only reason it might not work in North America is if the reciprocal service there is another wavelength say 850mhz. Then I would need a quad-band phone I imagine.

Orange website says their partner in Canada is Rogers Telecom but they are unable to tell me, at Orange Customer Services, which wavelength it operates on over there...and if my phone can support it via Orange. Nor are they prepared or able to activate Global roaming on my phone, they say I must do that myself when I get there, nor will they unlock it for me so I can use another prepaid card while I am there.

All in all, 0/10 for Orange Customer Services.

So I am a bit stuck really. Only other option is to buy another phone to use over there which seems a bit expensive for a week's trip. If so which one should I go for in the UK which has a PAYG service and roaming option? Is Virgin anygood? Unless someone has some alternative suggestions?

ref: ny, not sure about canada, i think they use cingular/at&t

Depending on which provider Orange use (Cingular or t-mobile) Cingular uses mostly 850MHz, Cingular has some 1900MHz towers, mainly in larger cities, most of them left over from when they bought out AT&T so you'd need a quad band phone, which has all of those 3 bands, plus 850. T-Mobile uses 1900, so you'd be fine with a tri-band, BUT, they have roaming agreements with some 850MHz band providers, so if you went outside T's coverage area, you'd be no good with a tri-band.
