I've got an Orangle locked HTC Hero and have just bought an Ovivo to use with it. Having unlocked my Orange HTC Desire myself for free following instructions off the internet I though it would be just as easy for the older phone but I can't find any similar guides for the Hero.
Therefore I will be going down the pay route and will be obviously looking for the cheapest possible method. I see that ebay has unlock codes on offer for a couple of quid from sellers with good ratings so would welcome the thoughts of anyone who has done just that.

I got mine from eBay as well. paying nominal fee assure the good service rather than finding free.

Got as far as here unlocking but the phone says that 00000000 is the wrong password, thanks in advance for any help.
