It's *#06# if you're trying to find your IMEI number (it should also be printed inside your phone, behind the battery).
As regards unlocking, I think Virgin recently changed their policy and you'll have to pay to get them to unlock it (whereas it used to be free if you had spent at least £30 on topups). It may be cheaper to take it to a pro unlocker and pay £5 - £10 to get them to do it.
