I think that's a lot less intuitive than prefixing the control key together with the key that looks like the accent. You don't have to remember several numbers

    The same reasoning applies to © ® ™ €

Might be less intuitive, but the control key thing isn't working for me.

For instance how would you do à?

I tried pressing ctrl then the top left ` and then a, and nothing happens. Also ctrl a seems to result in a load of text being highlighted!

no, press control and ` together, same as for other ctrl key use, then press the letter

Nope andy88, it isn't working for me. I can get it to do é by doing control alt e, as suggested by scheming gypsy, but none of the ones you have listed work for me.

Me neither. I can only think it is due to the older VERSIONS of Windows or Word I am still using, namely Windows 98SE and Office 2000.

oh sorry - I'm surprised by that, as I was learning on evening course with W98SE; can't remember which version of Office they had.
  • Thanks for this. A quick search on google found the following link which gives me all the codes I need to be able to type documents in French

    http://french.about.com/library/bl-accents.htm

    The most common ones being

    alt + 133 to get à
    alt + 131 to get â
    alt + 135 to get ç
    alt + 130 to get é
    alt + 138 to get è
    alt + 136 to get ê
    alt + 147 to get ô
I find this information invaluable in allowing me to bypass the 'swear' filters on other forums I subscribe to! icon10.gif

    Are there any for 'i'?

Excellent! And 'u' as well - I can now swear with impunity. :j
