    control+shift+alt+e = acute accent e
same thing for other vowels I think, just try them all out.

Alternatively, go to Insert -> Symbol, and there you will see the character map for the chosen font. It also has a button for Shortcut Key which will then let you create your own custom shortcut key combination for that particular letter with accent.

    I've always wondered this. Thanks.

Whilst we're on the subject, can anyone advise how to get a grave accent over a vowel (slopes other way from the acute accent given above), also a cedilla under a c, and a circumflex over an a. I've tried using the character map, but couldn't get it to work.
  • In the same vein.... my Office 2003 in work will not allow me to do í (Ctrl + Alt + i). All the other vowels work fine.....any ideas?
btw, it works fine at home on the same Office version.

the character map should do all accents, including those Czech ones like an inverted circumflex. Scroll the Insert Symbol grid, select the character and press Insert. There are also Alt + number shortcuts; enter the four figure number, then Alt X, but you'd have a job remembering many - eg 0159, Alt X = ř

but there are more short cuts .......

prefix the letter with ctrl and one of the following keys (some need shift as well of course) ' ` ^ : @ ~ , to get ie é è ê ä å ñ ç (nb ` is the top left key next to 1)

then press the letter itself, ie ...

    é - e after ctrl '
    è - e after ctrl `
    ê - e after ctrl ^
    ä - a after ctrl :
    å - a after ctrl @
    ñ - n after ctrl ~
    ç - c after ctrl ,

then paste them into here if you wish of course.

Hold in the alt key, then on your numeric keypad (to the right of the arrow keys) press 898.

    é.

Hurray! With a bit of memory, you can get all sorts of nice characters this way, like ‼ (787), ù (151), Ù (4587). It goes on and on and on.

Thanks for this. A quick search on google found the following link which gives me all the codes I need to be able to type documents in French

    http://french.about.com/library/bl-accents.htm

    The most common ones being

    alt + 133 to get à
    alt + 131 to get â
    alt + 135 to get ç
    alt + 130 to get é
    alt + 138 to get è
    alt + 136 to get ê
    alt + 147 to get ô

I think that's a lot less intuitive than prefixing the control key together with the key that looks like the accent. You don't have to remember several numbers
