Can I cancel a Paypal payment if it is "unclaimed"??

The situation is this:

I bid on and won an item on Tuesday, something I need quite quickly. I deliberately chose an item that was ending soon, checked that the seller would post first class and paid immediately with Paypal.

As of this morning the payment is showing as "unclaimed" which apparently means that the seller may not yet have set up their Paypal account.

Does anyone know how long this is likely to take her/him?

I put a note with the payment explaining that I need the item quickly, and sent a polite message last night, asking them to do what they could to sort out the payment asap, but have had no reply.

I am a bit annoyed, as it now looks as though I won't get the item for when I need it. If the seller would contact me to let me know what is going on, I would feel happier. But if they don't, can I cancel the payment?
(And then buy the item elsewhere).

I don't think it is right that a seller should put that they accept Paypal in a listing, if they haven't got the account working. Actually, I've just checked and this is the ONLY payment method accepted! I use it because USUALLY the transaction goes through instantly, and I get my goods in a day or so. I do feel that I have been misled here.

i think it will be returned to you if not claimed within 30 days

just because someone is sending an item 1st class, it doesn't mean they will send it 1st class the same day or day after you pay, unless they state that in the auction? they have 7 days to send the item.

how much feedback does the seller have? how much of it is for selling?

if it's not much it is possible that they need to accept the payment if you have paid by debit or credit card? as they may not have a premier paypal account which automatically accepts payments from cards.

you are very lucky if you normally receive items in a day or so, i often have to wait a week to receive some items i buy.

Fair enough, but they did say they would post straight away in the listing!

And, perhaps I have been lucky, but I find most people do send stuff out promptly - or at least tell you when they will be posting.

I make a point of paying quickly, and have never had this before. In my experience, a paypal payment is instant, and I am annoyed that this one isn't (through no fault of mine) - and that the seller can't be bothered to respond to my emails, now that there is a problem.

    Some you lose, I suppose.

Try getting their contact details and tel no from ebay and call them ,It might me something really simple like a digit/letter wrong on paypal email address.

Are you emailing direct or via ebay messages ,whichever one you are using try the other.

Try looking at transaction details on Paypal and see if it gives any more info as to why it is unclaimed. i.e recipient is unregistered or something?

How long are you talking? There could be any number of reasons why seller has not responded immediately to you.

I have contacted them both ways, but am still waiting for a reply.

The transaction details only list possibilities why the payment is unclaimed, not specifics. It does say that you can cancel the payment by clicking on "unclaimed" then on "cancel", but if i click on "unclaimed, i just get the explanations, there is no "cancel" button that I can see.

(I am normally more patient than this, but in this case, the item is needed by weekend!)

Of course there could, I know that!

I am not talking very long, and perhaps am expecting too much, but I'm judging on how I as a seller treat my buyers, which I appreciate is not necessarily how everyone does it.

I am prepared to wait a bit longer, but if it comes to me having to cancel the payment, I was just trying to find out how to do that.

    Try phoning.

Has the seller sold other things recently?

I had the same problem a few weeks ago ,it was due to the seller having missed a letter from their email address when linking the paypal account to ebay.
In my case it said somewhere that the recipient was unregistered or something.
I was able to cancel and then pay directly to the correct email when seller explained problem.
Unfortunately I can't remember what I did to cancel it ,but there must have been an option somewhere.

    Good luck

I had this problem the other day, there is a cancel option in your paypal , so just cancel it, the money goes straight back into your paypal.
