MFI Kitchen ordered Oct 2007

This is to warn anyone who has just bought one and to let people know this could be you if you are considering it.

We ordered our new kitchen in early October after a remortgage. Got a good deal as it was a bit cheaper than we budgeted for and was looking forward to a nice brand spanking new kitchen for Christmas, which is why we went ahead when we were promised it would be in well before then, November to be procise.

We got the new floor tiles down ready, stripped the walls bare ready for new electrics and we were all set, the following things happened. (This is a list i've recently drawn up for their Manager!)
1. Kitchen arrived and found with no cornice
2. During fitting it was found larder door damaged, new one ordered
3. Items due to be delivered early December (good we wanted it finished for xmas)
4. A week after date given I contacted customer service who told me the delivery had been delayed until the new year, I let her know my disappointment at not being told until I had rang and that it would ruin Christmas for us
5. Day before date of arrival we were contacted to be told door would be delayed, I asked about cornice and that was confirmed to be delivered the following day. I spoke of the previous conversation and mentioned that not a word of apology was said particularly as it was me that was chasing up the items. A note of Goodwill gesture was supposed to be put on the computer on finalisation of the kitchen
6. Finally after door arrived there was a further delay waiting for the fitter to fit us into his busy schedule
7. On finishing the work he found the cornice to be send in the wrong colour and that one pack was ok.
8. After he had gone I discovered the larder door to be slightly damaged and spent 20 minutes on the phone trying to reorder another one
9. Items finally re delivered and I opened the door to check it was ok and ripped packaging of cornice to see the colour was right I rang fitter who promptly turned up by the end of the week.
10. On his arrival which was brief again, the door was fitted, the cornice had been sent as a plain pattern
11. 4th March telephone call to say the cornice is no longer available with the patteren and we have been given the suggestion of a plain one, the reason we picked this design was because of the cornice setting it off and we have reached the end of our patience.
12. 5th March, rang fitter to confirm the details were right as he'd told my partner they had delivered the "old design" he told me he didn't know which was which but then said they are doing the traditional one now not the "pretty" one.
I rang the number i was given yesterday and told the girl to see if the shops had any display parts they could use, we are talking about a piece of cornace about a meter and half in lenght here!

Still waiting on a reply.

We paid good money for this and chose this one because of the way that the cornice set it off, believe me when i say the plain traditional one is awful looking. I was told they changed their supplier and now thats the reason why its not being done.

Does anyone know if we have the right to ask for either a different patterened cornice or a change of fronts altogether to make it look attractive in the way that we want it not MFI's suggestion.

Which is why they were on Watchdog this week. You will be lucky if they havent' discontinued your kitchen, some people are having to have bits cobbled together from ex display kitchens!

I would ask for a refund and take the kitchen out, if you can cope with the extra stress and hassle.

I'm having one of their kitchens fitted as we speak, i'm using one of their fitters (recommended) although i little more expensive, he is excellent so far, our delivery was missing an oven (we ordered two) he chased this up straight away, this was delivered the following day, a work top was damaged, again he chased this up and it was deliver at 06.50am the following day.
Even though we are having a good job done this time, in our previous house the fitter was a nightmare, in the end i sacked him, to be told by MFI that i couldnt do this! i politley told them that my contract was with them and not the fitter, i corrected a lot of bits myself then invoiced them, which the happy to pay.
I do sympathise with you, isnt the store managers contact details on the invoice?

Check out the watchdog report on mfi, as apparently mfi have opened a dedicated phone line for any customers with issues.

My mum had told me it had been mentioned on the telly but couldn't remember on what, so i've missed the programme :(

What I didn't mention was we also had missing cooker problem and it had to be shipped over from the mainland at practically the cost of the cooker, they have a warehouse over here which apparently, they aren't allowed to stock up! So they must lose loads of money in the long run.

Our fitter is good to, i've no complaints at all with him, he's done his best to help re order the parts ect and he does sympathise with us.

I'll see if watchdog has a website (probably) and will hunt out the invoice.

Our problem is when we remortgaged we started renovating the whole house, the kitchen is just part of it, we had the chimney took out, which has also resulted in leaking bedroom ceiling and we put in our own bathroom too, which is still to be finished off.

Its like the house isn't going to be finished anytime soon and the thought of going through another refit is a nightmare, although I'd do it as long as it wouldn't cost us a penny as there's not any of those left after all of the above as you can imagine.

Just sent off an email regarding this, listing the above, thanks guys for letting me know about Watchdog, at least i've a FREE number i can hang on the line for and better still an address, not that it wouldn't have been on the invoice, its just a case of wondering where in the house it got to! I do have the delivery note and ref number anyhow and did threaten to have the lot taken back and have a refund, so i'll let you know the outcome, if any :/

Did you write direct to Watchdog too? While the story is hot to their show, I'm sure they may be interested in helping.

MFI can always deny receiving e-mail. Letter sent recorded delivery perhaps?
After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.

I finally got a call, since my last post this is what happened.

A few phone calls got me to the branch i got the kitchen off and spoke to the woman who first ordered it. She said she'd pass the message onto her manager who would call me back. I thought that day! Nothing!

A few days later my other half got a call, bare in mind i've been the one taking all calls so far. They told him that we would get replacement bottom fixtures to go with the top cornice and change the facia over to the plain one they sell with the kitchen now and get them ordered for us. We decided to go with this for the sake of selling the house on in future, not that we fancied the facia, ours was much more pleasing to the eye. Compensation was again mentioned but can't have until kitchen "complete"!

The call also said that there was some of the cornice in store and they would arrange the fitter to collect when we called them to let them know the other stuff arrived.

The other stuff arrived and left on our doorstep without a knock on the door, not like their delivery service at all!

It was at this stage everything was muddled up as a further call told us that the original cornice was scheduled for delivery but this bottom cornice fixture that was left on the doorstep was delayed.

Two weeks ago we decided to take a trip up to the store and get it sorted once and for all, i took my original order sheet and took the sheets off the items we've got lying up our stairs gathering dust!

When we got there the manager was called as they "didn't know who we were when we first got there!" she said WE were the ones they were waiting for to call us to come into the store and collect the facia off the display!!

I looked at the display and said firstly that wasn't enough and secondly my other half said the caller had told him that it was the original cornice that was supposed to have been found there and the fitter was supposed to be picking it up.

    Another misunderstanding!

In the end - and if you aren't totally confused by now - the replacement was yet again ordered and will be with us next tuesday, were we will be ringing the store once more so they can arrange the fitter to come and get the bloody job done, i'd like to say once and for all but no, we have another problem Huston!

The dishwasher has started leaking and the side end panel has started to warp through it. I'm glad the kitchen isn't sorted yet now, as the girl I asked about said due to the nature of the fault she will have to send the fitter down to take a look to make the call wether its faulty plumbing or the dishwasher before they can send out a repair. THEN we will get a replacement end panel - sob!

Will post back December at this rate and let you know what compen we finally got!

I wouldnt touch mfi kitchens anyway, they are shocking. I fitted one, and never again, as the client had the same problems as you.
