As we have Sky TV and broadband I've been thinking of taking out their phone too. Ive had different dates given me by BT for when my contract ends, the latest is May (and that was by someone in India), when do I need to contact sky about the transfer?

You can CPS your calls to SKY whenever you like at no financial penalty from BT.

That used to be the case but Sky has now started offering its own line rental (to trap punters into paying Sky rates for all non-inclusive calls - such as calls to mobiles).

Leave your line rental with BT, it's far safer.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I dont understand what you mean by "its far safer"

Sky charges the following for calling mobiles:

Sky Talk Freetime: Nil per month

Calls to mobiles Daytime = 11.88 pence per min
Calls to mobiles Evening = 7.13 pence per min

(6p connection fee applies to all calls)

Sky Talk Unlimited: £5 per month

Calls to mobiles Daytime = 9.38 pence per min
Calls to mobiles Evening = 5.63 pence per min

(6p connection fee applies to all calls)

Sky Talk is between 5-25% cheaper than BT for calls to mobiles, however I am aware that other providers are cheaper than Sky.

im now even more confused than i was before!

is it better to have bt line at 11 pound per month and 5 pound unlimited calls by sky.

    OR

Sky line rental and 5 pound per month unlimited calls by sky?

I'd say the former - because you'd then be free to change to another CPS calls provider if/when you wanted (if you handed over your line rental to Sky, you'd save 50p/month but would then have to change back to BT line rental first).

Additionally, handing over your line rental to Sky would tie you into their call prices (e.g. for calls to mobiles and 084/087 numbers) when BT (via the 1280 CPS override prefix) or 18185 might be cheaper.

Yes, you have to stay with BT for line rental for 12 months - but you can sign up to a CPS provider whenever you want.

Sky charges exactly the same price for calls to 0845/0870 numbers as BT.

Calls made using Sky to call mobiles are cheaper than BT.

Sky give you Free Caller Display, Free 1571 ( No condtions attached to make calls throughout the month to qualify for the free service )

Sky gives customers Free evening inclusive calls to 01/02 numbers ( no need to agree to a rolling contract like BT )

When i've phoned Sky Talk with any questions I dial 150 from my phone choose 1 option for Sky Talk and the call is answered. The longest I waited was 14 seconds.

The advisor was in Scotland (Dunfermline)

But Sky block 18185 which the OP wants to use to get cheap peak geographical calls, and cheap mobile calls.
they don't block the 18185 number as it works on mine

This looked interesting until I found out you have to subscribe to a Sky TV package to get the Sky Talk services. Pity, otherwise I would have gladly ditched BT.
