How to block off holes in your house?

I've come to realise that my house is full of holes....literally. :( I didn't appreciate this was the case until we started refurbing it.

I suppose the worst and largest amount are the holes where pipes come up through the floor, like under the kitchen sink for instance. You never see or notice these normally so I'd never really thought about it but since our kitchen is out now we see everything.

What would be the best method of blocking the airflow off around these holes? We're sitting here freezing tonight and it's mainly because of the draughts.

I know from reading tradesmens forums that you should not use expanding foam near electric cable as the foam will cause the cable to become brittle, but I don't know if it can be used near copper and plastic pipes?

If not foam, what else?

If you suffer from mice at all, then block off your holes with wire wool, unlike expanding foam, they can't chew through it.

I had afew drafts in my house...it was mainly caused by an ill fitting loft hatch...got a sheet of 1" MDF and cut a new one out undercoated it then glossed it but some handles on to use when going in and out of the loft it stopped alot of the draft ...
then under the bath was a hole as large as a football for the pipes why I ask well I don't know so some expanding foam sorted that one out...around the shirting boards gaps of more than a cm so a got some sealent just normal white stuff the cheapest I could find from toolstation around 89p a tube and went along that in each room before putting any more new laminate or carpet down...I have also found that if you put underlay under carpets even ones that are foam backed this not only proves as sound proof but also stops any drafts..took a cupborad down in my front bedroom which revealed a large hole packed it with cardboard then polyfillered it works a treat you cannot see there was a hole...hth's:D

    Plans for 2009

:D Please dont fight on my thread. I have enough 'discussions' going on in my own house right now without you two making it worse. :D

Bang.....I wasn't sure if the fire cement was an actual thing or some sort of comment for the two who were fighting. :rotfl: Anyway, I googled it and it seems quite good, cheers.

Good idea about the wire wool too.
