Soda bread - I am a fool

Hello,

It pains me to admit what a fool I am, but in making some soda bread from a recipe provided by a kindly OSer, I managed to put in too much bicarb (I got paranoid about it not raising cos not all the flour I used was SR and forgot that too much would make it taste vile - I am a very baaad cook I know)

It looks perfect. It smells perfect. The texture is perfect. But it tastes EVIL!

I'm sticking to the recipe next time, oh yes. I guess I'm gonna have to throw the bicarby bread away, any suggestions other than the ducks? (could I even do that to ducks!!) The waste just seems shocking...

I can't think of, nor can I find, any use for it. You could bake it until it's absolutly solid and use it as a door stop...

..you might have to admit defeat on this one.

I think it'd probably be very bad for the ducks...

in what way does it taste bad - is it obviously BofS taste or is it (say) just really really salty?

If it's just needing "diluted" as it were, I'd breadcrumb it and use it in burgers or something like that?
Pre O/S: what's a vitamin? Does it begin with the letter e?Now: I'm not eating any of that pre-made rubbish...
  • I'm sure we've all been guilty of raising-agent blunders at some time! I made banana bread the other day and got my tsps and tbsps mixed up...

It's worse than just really salty. Really evil aftertaste that would prob pervade breadcrumbs too!

Well, I can throw it with a clear conscience knowing I have consulted you lot!

I don't have a compost heap...anyone near Sarf London want some bread for their compost heap...!?!

    Thanks all

I feel your pain. I baked a loaf last night which went very strange and I cannot think why? Maybe breadbaker was knackered as I used it twice in one day!

Today had another fiasco with the breadmaker.

To crown it all, I made lentil dahl. Now I make this week in week out, no problems. Today, though the lentils still taste hard. dont know if its the kind of lentils (they were cheap) or I cooked them too long???

It sounds more like the lentils weren't cooked for long enough - maybe it was an older batch?
