I notice that Martin considers 'put it straight into the recycling' to be 'the green option'; well I disagree - that is a massive waste of resources.

Even if you are recycling, you've still wasted masses of energy in the manufacturing and distribution of the magazine. If you at least read the magazine, then this waste can be partially written off as having served a purpose.

As such, I would take the truly green option and read the magazine before recycling it.

In recycle bins all over the country. After being read, probably. :)

Surely the 'truly green option' would be to read it, and then donate it on to the local doctor/dentist etc for the waiting room...:D Assuming of course it's not a :o 'specialist' mag:o

    not a term i use.
we condemn mail for variuos reasons,
if you ever had an item returned to you,it would have had a red label with not called for,not known etc ticked as the reason.
on an average day i will condemn easily 100+ letters.
these will be people i know are gone away(though technically i should deliver them),incomplete/wrong addresses, refused(people returning junk mail but still live there)so they are stickered up.
then another dept will mark them and sort them into
    letters with return address
letters without being sent to belfast for official opening and finding a return address
letters without a return address being sent for destruction eg mailsort

although regarding returning mail evenwhen people live at that address.
i recommend you don t do it.
i recently had a load of mail returned so assumed the person had moved away and i condemned all mail after that.(for obver 6 weeks)
turned out he just decided to return letters form certain companys

Junk mail should always be returned to sender. Just put "Return to Sender" on it and pop it in the letterbox.

That way, the sender will have to pay for it twice, thus supporting our wonderful Royal Mail :j

Actually the sender does not pay for the return of the mail. Royal mail does that for free. But if you want to return to sender correctly, you should cross out your address as it shows on the envelope and leave the name visible. It is more helpful to the sender if you give a reason for return. Like gone away or not known.

This will speed up their process of removing your address from their database and cut down on the junk that you get for other people.

Opening someone elses mail is a criminal offence and you can be prosecuted. Having said that I am still getting junk mail for a couple who lived in this house 5 years ago. I put it through the shredder

    So is shredding their post.

The postmen dont even deliver it. It is put to one side in the sorting office and labels put on them for immediate return to sender.

  • I had magazines for the son of the previous owner, pornographic!!
Advised sender but kept getting them so informed local bobby, stopped then!
About missing post-my post kept going missing then 1 morning I caught the paper boy stuffing letters and a parcel (left in the porch) under his coat!!
Informed newsagent but wouldn`t do anything as the papers would not get delivered! Charming. So..........mystery solved. Lost customer.
    Post DOES go missing still.

Killy offs are letters that are returned to the delivery office with things like return to sender or addressee gone away etc. We obviously don't have an address for everyone so it gets killed off and returned to the original sender who can/should then update their records so nothing more is sent.

One guy I delivered too even claimed to be dead so that he didn't get certain stuff sent to him! It made me laugh anyway!
