Anyone heard of or used eccostores.com?

Just turned up an incredibly cheap online store at Ecco Stores while looking for a Panasonic TV on Froogle. It looks like it's based in the US, everything's priced in dollars, and there are prices for international shipping, but it looks like the sterling price in front of it, so the Panasonic TX-32LXD700 (which is about £760 at Amazon UK) is $750.

Plus, it says in their FAQs about tax and duties:

Enjoy no sales tax on every order. EccoStores pays all applicable sales tax for you. We spare no expense when it comes to making our customers happy!

Plus, plus it says about shipping

The cost of shipping will vary according to the weight of the item, shipping method and delivery destination. We offer two different methods of shipping: UPS and FedEx. You can select which method of shipping you prefer and the shipping cost is calculated accordingly. All shipping costs are displayed as a separate item in the shopping basket so you can see exactly how much shipping costs. For more infromation about shipping click here

Note: For one week only, we're offering no shipping charges on orders over $400.*

I'm always wary of something that seems too good to be true, so I wanted to check if anyone else had ever had any dealings with them before ordering.

  • I've been wondering the same thing! I've been scouring the net to find info on the company, but to no avail! I've checked the Better Business Bureau and Ripoff.com. I did a simple google search on the name, but nothing good or bad seems to come up. Tomorrow, I'm going to put in a call to Paypal and see if they are a legitimate seller with a good rating.

I want the Canon 40D that they list at $650, almost have of the retail price! I'm fairly certain it's too good to be true.

I am planing to buy laptop from that web site, well yeah prices are too good to be true, if either one of you find out anything please post a message and let me know, I would really appreciate it, thanks...
  • This looks too good to be true - I just found a camera via Froogle that I was going to buy from there, but Google'ing the website came up with only this forum post!

Having looked on Whois.net, the eccostore.com domain name was only registered on 26 February 2008 - i.e. a week ago today! It was registed to

    Carmine Coburn
    1938 Sw 167th ST
    Burien, WA 98166
    USA

Funny how they have three pages of testimonials already....

Ecco Stores Inc (the name of the company in the footer of their website) is a company in Washington, but it sells womens clothing!

The Contact Us form on the website has no postal or email address and there are no telephone numbers present on the website as far as I can see.

Check out the addresses given in Europe, my search seems to suggest that the 'billing' addresses are hotels in Italy and Spain!
  • Their privacy policy has been lifted directly from JR.com - which does appear to a genuine outlet.

to help with what weemee suggests

the addresses in Italy and Spain are found on the about us section of the site

the italian address is definitely that of a hotel in Rome as found via expedia

    http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll/qscr=dspv/htid=24627/crti=1/hotel-location-map

I cannot get the Madrid address to match exactly to a hotel but it would appear it could be a hostel.

As the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I personally would not buy from this company.
  • The address on About Us even matches the womens clothing store!

I guess the old maxim that if it looks too good to be true it probably is, is still true. I was suspicious about the lack of landline and physical address, but didn't think to check the Whois register. That the information on the shipping page looks like its taken as screen shots from two different sites (different fonts and sizes for UPS and FedEx delivery), the 'lowest price guarantee' and 'Trusted Commerce' logos seem to go nowhere other than the shipping information page. I've contacted Trustwave.com who are behind the 'Trusted commerce' logo to ask whether it's being used legitimately.

I did contact them last night via their online form, but not heard back from that either so I guess, if nothing else, this thread might act as a warning. I get the feeling they're either harvesting credit card details, or just taking orders that'll never be fulfilled.

Just to be on the safe side, I've reported the site to Google, the Federal Trade Commission and the Internet Crime Complaint Center, and to Mastercard through Capital One's email address for web complaints.
  • Here is my take on eccostores.com

I used their "Contact Me" form two days ago and have not received a reply. I discovered another site that is an exact duplicate of eccostores.com down to the prices and testimonials. Check out - http://elcidelectonics.com

elcidelectronics.com shows an address in New York.

Here is a forum showing details about this site. This is a must read - http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19519188-Apple-iPod-Video-5th-Generation-30GB-Media-Player-116

Hope this helps others avoid these websites.
