After spending a long time looking at reviews on TFT monitors, I have narrowed it down to three makes. All are 17" and are 1)Benq 2)Relisys 3) LG.(Not necessarily in that order) I only surf the net and send E mails so it does not have to be 'up market'. My current CRT monitor is not playing up but I would like my limited desk space back! Of course, all you 'techies' out there maybe saying differently and I would sincerely welcome your opinions. Thank you

I wouldn't buy the monitor from Aldi. It looks cheap, I'd personally rather spend an extra £50 and get a higher quality monitor (or one that's been recommended/highly reviewed) that'll be more beneficial to my eyes.
The Relisys (can't remember the model number) is meant to be very good (in terms of a budget tft) and scores well in reviews. It's always worth checking sites such as https://www.pcpro.co.uk (their labs section) and https://www.anandtech.com, https://www.tomshardware.com, https://www.sharkeyextreme.com etc..."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Go for a Proper brand anyhow. Have seen these in the MSE forum, they seem a very good price! for a hitachi with a DVI and VGA inputs and in either colour you prefer, and the shop/seller is supposed to be good...

good luck0 -
Go for a low refresh rate on the monitor if you can, some monitors are 40 milseconds while others are 10.
My daughter has an Aldi monitor and it may look cheap? but it works ok for her.I'm not poor i'm just skint0 -
Thank you to all who have posted replies so quickly. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly you can get assistance on this site. I am looking to spend in the region of £150/£160. The Benq P737S, I can pick up for £140 and has DVI. The Relisys TL 795RU also with DVI for £160 and the LG for about £151 without DVI. I had also seen the nixnix site but wasn't aware that the Hitachi came with DVI, so probably worth another look. Once again, thank you to all who have responded so quickly0

Well, I'm sat viewing the MSE site via a 19" LCD panel bought from Aldi, and it works just fine for me (and, working at home, it's used for 10 hours+ per day with no ill effects). Admittedly, it's branded Gericom whereas the 17" one seems to be a Medion, and I don't exactly use it for playing games on.
Each to their own, but £50 extra on a £140 purchase is a massive 35% higher priced...not a premium I was prepared to pay.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
I wasn't saying it wouldn't work fine, I'm sure it would. When compared to a slightly more expensive monitor though you would notice a difference.
Personally, I'd rather buy a TFT that maybe has a lower response rate, DVI, a longer warranty, better contrast ratio and has been extensively reviewed and tested. I'm a programmer so spend countless hours infront of a screen and noticed a difference when upgrading from my cheaper TFT and buying a £250 Sharp.
A monitor is always something worth budgeting for (as it is effectively the component you interact with most). I'd happily get a decent quality monitor and in exchange spend less on the base unit."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
..........and it's probably the one component of your system, other than the case, that you'll keep the longest and upgrade the most infrequently.
