02 COntract

I am currently stuck in an 18 months £35 a month o2 Contract. I am now into my 4th month.
I have contacted 02 to see when i can downgrade my tarrif and they say that this can only be done after 9 months, the MSE site says that it is 6months. Is this different because I am on a 18month contract?
Does anyone know how i can reduce this tarriff? What are the rules for breaking a contract?

  • From O2's T&Cs-
"Unless you have selected a SIM Only tariff, O2 Pay Monthly is subject to status, credit-check and the terms of a 12, 18 or 24 month minimum term O2 contract. After connecting or upgrading to a minimum term contract, you’re unable to move to a lower priced Pay Monthly tariff for 9 months unless otherwise stated. After 9 months you can change tariff a maximum of once per month, provided that if moving down a tariff you can only move to the next lowest priced tariff with the same minimum term. If you move from a tariff which is not currently available you will not be able to change back to your previous tariff."

The only thing you can really do is remove any bolt-ons you have (so long as you're not using the services they provide as that would just end up costing you more). If you don't pay them you'll get bad marks as arrears on your credit files, possible court action, debt-collectors turning up, etc etc. The only things I can suggest is trying to get someone to 'buy' the contract off you, sell the handset if it's a good'un and buy a cheap one and use the difference to pay off some of the bills, or try to sweet talk o2. I don't think they would do anything too helpfull but perhaps if you can demonstrate that the contract would cause extreme hardship and financial problems they may listen. The CAB may offer some advice but unfortunately at the end of the day a contract is a contract and doesn't take into account someones changing circumstances.

  • My gf was given a 200 minute tariff on upgrade as she was getting a £100 a month mobile bill and wanted to get rid of it.

Now the guys in the O2 shop said that the 200 tariff was the best for her yet her bills have continued to be £100 a mth....

Even given the T&C's and the fact it's 3 mths into a 12mth contract, could she get leverage with O2 to boost her minutes do you think?

Would you be talking about upgrading the tariff to more minutes? If so, this can be done at any point as far as I'm aware.

You can go to a higher tariff after 1 month, but to downgrade your tariff you need to wait till month 9.
