My one piece of advice to anyone who receives these calls is to avoid putting your number on ANY survey form, or giving it to any organisation. Also, check and recheck any boxes at the bottom of forms asking if they can send you info. Some ask you to tick it, some ask you to untick it .. read it and read it again. Best of luck.

This is why I have 0870 and 0871 numbers they connect straight to a voicemail service, and also a Sipgate account that is only used as a voicemail number for when I fill details in online and they do not allow use of an 0870/1 number.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

  • Does that cost money though Bextech?

If it does, and people can't afford it, the other option is to put your dialling code in the box then put 123456. Works everytime.

I find it infuriating when I'm asking for things online and it forces me to put a telephone number in (that's when I use the old 123456 number).

One time in Dixons they asked me for my number and I said I didn't have one ... the guy was really rude saying 'you have to have a home phone, you have to give me the number'. needless to say I didn't (told him I couldn't afford phone) and got him told off by manager ! ha. revenge is sweet.

No the 0870/0871 numbers are issued free, some providers will pay you revenue for when your number is called.

Sipgate also offer you a number of any area code you wish, you don't need to live in that area code, for free, you just set up all calls to voicemail if you don't want to be contacted via that number.

Yes you can enter 123456.... on most, there are some however that realise that is not a real number, I used to use non-existent number in the theatrical use range too.

I have these numbers as it is interesting to see if they do try and call. And also to hit back at companies who expect me to pay a premium to call their 0870/0871 numbers.

We used to have a number 1 digit different from a university. We got loads of calls for them, so asked BT if we could change. The adviser told us that it was free if they were nuisance calls, and so "of course they were a nuisance." Incessant sales calls ARE a nuisance, so make sure you get the number changed for free.

Yes, sorry, didn't make myself clear. Of course if your number is similar to one of a business such as a University or taxi firm and you are receiving calls for them in error, then BT will change your number for free. These are not nuisance calls in BT's eyes, they are CIE (calls in error).

When people have put their own telephone number down on leaflets, competitions, research forms etc and/or not ticked the box to say they didn't want sales calls .. BT may question doing it for free.
They would ask the customer to register on the TPS, to register for BT Privacy (free of charge) and see how that went. At the end of the day, it costs money to change a number and BT is a business itself so wouldn't be able to just change everyones numbers because some people are too lazy to read the small print (not aimed at anyone in particular). I know some people do not put their numbers down but believe me, some do and then get annoyed when they're called.

What I was saying is that the BT chap was telling us how to get the number changed for free. He told us that if you allege nuisance calls it would not be a problem.
  • BT will not charge you for changing your number as the charges were abolished quite some time ago, but do remember that if you are using another phone company to advise them of your new number as well so that you can continue using their service for your calls.
