I phoned BT, changed my number, went ex directory and then registered with the TPS.

I get no calls from sales people at all.
Just run, run and keep on running!

When you talk to BT request a number that is not recycled - otherwise you could find yourself having the old number of a pub/nightclub/taxi firm......

Amusing at first to offer to send taxis round in 5 minutes, but wears thin after a while getting calls at all times of day & night.

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice

You phone your telephone line provider, be that BT, NTL, Telewest or Bulldog, not the provider you route calls through unless they are the same as you line provider.

When you speak to customer services you ask them to make your number ex directory.

You have a choice of either not having your name, address and number in the phone book AND not be available via 118... directory enquires, or just not in the book but still available via 118...

We have always had our number ex directory.

Though having your number ex directory will probably not make much difference, we still got sales calls until we joined TPS several years back, now don't get so much just now the odd "You have won a holiday" ones.

Just have to make sure you never give your number out to companies, who then sell your number on. I have an 0870 and 0871 number I use for certain companies and that just goes straight to a very long voicemail message.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

There is as well the third option of 'no-such subscriber', but that is generally not available to normal people.

I prefer the option of not in the phone book, but available via 118 to being completely ex-directory. That seemed to give the best of both options, stopping sales calls trawling through the phone book, but if someone did need my number in an emegency they could get it.

Thanks for the further info !
  • There is now a new service offered by BT called BT Privacy. It is completely free of charge and will hopefully eradicate any calls for you.

When you register, it will automatically register you with the TPS (Telephone Preference Service) and then, as an added help, it wil put Caller Display on your line free of charge (has been chargeable for years so great news).

You would need to purchase a telephone that is capable of using Caller Display or you could just buy a separate Caller Display unit. You can get these from most good telephone retailers and some rubbish ones!

For the person who said about changing their number, it's not quite as easy as that. If you are getting nuisance calls (as in scary), BT will, of course, change your number with no questions (after offering advice first) but I'm not so sure they would change the numbers of everyone who called up saying they were getting sales calls. After all, that's not BTs fault is it but it costs BT money to change it (it's not just a press of a button). Askign for a non recycled number would not work either .. ALL numbers have been used before, it just depends on when and for whom .... if you ask for an easy number, you can expect that it may well have been a business once upon a time as it's an EASY number ... that's the whole point of easy numbers.

So, to register for BT Privacy, call BT Privacy on 0800 121 8000 or go to bt.com and register online.

My one piece of advice to anyone who receives these calls is to avoid putting your number on ANY survey form, or giving it to any organisation. Also, check and recheck any boxes at the bottom of forms asking if they can send you info. Some ask you to tick it, some ask you to untick it .. read it and read it again. Best of luck.
