I mean the charges are a bit high even though they are lower then the usual charity admin costs for collecting funds. I was wondering is there a way of donating which will give more of the money to the charity then making profits for just giving.

Charity Choice offer completely free services (i.e. for both the contributor and the charity).

Unfortunately, if you are collecting for a charity and not actually registered yourself, you can't use it!

In other words, for those of us that raise money "on behalf of..." we can't have our own collection pages, the like of which you do get on JustGiving.

I haven't found another way that's as convenient as JG.... YET!!!

There are alternatives, but since the proportion of people signing up for Gift Aid (and including all the details needed), is significantly higher than on paper forms (at least in my experience), and the fact that the money goes t the charity speedily, instead of taking months to come in (if at all in some cases) I believe most charities find the fees are actually better than the alternatives.

To be fair according to some of the stuff I have read some of the charities are to blame for not collecting gift aid properly in the first place.

It is a shame there is a charge, but justgiving need something out of it I suppose... I have told the charity I'm raising money for that I will donate the equivalent of the transaction fee (my target is £500 so that only means £25)

Oh, I agree, charities could do much better, but as someone that has had to process sponsor forms, I can tell you that the number of people who put something like:

Name: Jimmy Address (inc postcode): c/o Carphone Warehouse

just makes me want to cry!

Gift Aid is a big thing of mine I love getting the tax back, believe me (I get a kick out of it, I know, I'm a little weird), so every donation that could be but isn't bugs me. Almost all of the JG ones are done right, so there it is.

On a £10 donation charges are based on the gross amount, so including the Gift Aid (assuming it's GiftAided)

    Credit Card Donation£10

    Tax Reclaim£2.82
    Transaction fee 5% £0.64
    VAT @ 17.5% £0.11
    Credit Card fee @ 1.34% for Visa or @ 1.4 % for MasterCard £0.14

    Total cost to charity £0.89

    Net donation£11.93

    Or
    Debit Card Donation £10

    Tax Reclaim£2.82
    Transaction fee 5% £0.64
    VAT @ 17.5% £0.11
    Debit card fee:
    22p for Switch/Maestro/Solo
    23p for Visa Delta/Visa Electron -£0.23

    Total cost to charity £0.98

    Net donation£11.84

and again, speaking only from my own experience, but I believe it's generally true, something like 80% of JG donations are GiftAided, while something like 50% of sponsor forms ones have the necessary info. New rules are going to change the figures here, but until I've dealt with some, I can't tell you if we'll still end up better off.

i wish they charged less, and I'm hoping they do, but my own thinking is that, since they've done all the work in prooting this as a method, if they don't keep costs down to reasonable levels, someone else will be delighted to come along and undercut them!

Lots of people have difficulty understanding basic forms.

What will be the changes to Gift Aid?
