edinburgh hotel - not 5 star!!!

Hi all, I know there are many threads about hotels in edinburgh but all seem to be 5 star hotels.
We are going for our anniversary in late april and want a hotel or b and b in the city centre. We are not fussy but would like something about 3 star

any recommendations??

    cant recommend any in paricular.
however edinburgh is a small city so dont get to hung up on the city centre.
lot of tram roadworks in place just now so the west end and leith areas are best avoided

Try the Apex hotels there are 2 on Grassmarket. Close to city centre but also lots of cafes and bars around.

We stayed at the Carlton which is 4* and very nice. It was booked through www.laterooms.co.uk.

There are a couple of Travelodges/Premier Travel Inns in the centre of Edinburgh, but they get booked up very early. I think there is also a Novotel and an Apex which would be 3.

I had a good deal on the Best Western on Bruntsfield Place through Lastminute. It's a short walk from the centre. Our room seemed quite a bit more luxurious than the budget ones, huge bathroom and lots of nice little touches. Not sure how it is situated for the roadworks though think it might be west -ish!

Also, MW guesthouse gets good reviews, can't post a link as the website seems to be down currently!

The university operates a very comfortable and well-located suite of guest rooms called Mackenzies. Go to their website (ed.ac.uk) and hunt around for bed and breakfast accommodation, and you will find it.

lothian road leading up towards tollcross is the main route diverting from the west end closures

That puts that one out then! :o Bruntsfield leads off Lothian Rd.

Though if you are on foot might not matter too much?

Sandaig Guest House was absolutely fantastic and not too expensive - only thing is it's in Leith so about 2 miles from city centre but it is on a bus route and looks on to a large park, Leith Links. Can't recommend it highly enough - short walk to pubs & restaurants, taxi to city centre only about £5, free parking outside (& we drove into city on the Sunday we were there - free on-street parking then, not sure whether its all weekend or just Sun). The guest house had a website if you want to google it

Tends to be used by coach parties

If you want to avoid the Hell that will be Lothian Road you walk across Bruntsfield Links, then the Meadows into town - about 15 minutes (the staff will point you in the right direction).

I'd be looking at places like the SAS Radisson, Jurys Inn or the Apex City all of which are close or on the Royal Mile
