The Instructor should also not have told him to 'lift as much as he could', he should have started low & worked up in increments until reaching the desired weight.

Couldn't agree more. In my opinion the instructor was negligent in telling you to do this. This is how injuries happen.

Rather than hoping for compensation maybe a better result would be proper training or the sack for the instructor who clearly isn't qualified to be doing what they are! :undecided

thanks Rab19 & southernscouser, I'm a female by the way. I wasn't even sure I should have been using weights anyway as I'm wanting to lose weight off my stomach, not build muscle, but the instructor said it would help. I don't know a lot about weight loss and fitness, which is why I was asking for help in the first place!

Seems I've just got off to a really bad start with the wrong trainer, so when my shoulder's sorted, I'll see if I can see someone a lot more experienced instead.

  • Flamingice - I'm sorry that you've endured some nastiness here. I didnt read in your post that you wanted to sue, so I dont know how that was jumped on.
Personally, I would phone them up & explain about the lack of training/induction you had through no one being available and your subsequent injury. Hopefully it will stop it happening to someone else.
I hope your pain eases soon and good luck in your weight loss & exercise regime.

Sorry Flaming - didn't know you were a chick!

I have a gym membership as I play Ice Hockey & need to keep my fitness up - I see a lot of people coming in for weight loss & the instructors here in Haslemere are fantastic with them. Concentrate mainly on reps rather than weight and make sure you get on the aerobic machines, such as the runner, the rower, the bike and the cross-trainer - build up endurance on these & that will definitely help! Couple all that with sensible eating & you'll soon see some results mate :D

Good luck & I'd definitely ask about the Personal Training sessions to help you get into the swing of it all (and help you learn how to use the machines!)

    All the best

    Hiya

Ok all this is my opinion & not meant to have a go at others posting, I can see why opinions are so divided! Ok, compensation wise, I assume the gym is like mine where you sign an agreement saying you'll pay monthly for x months? I assume the OP wanted maybe a month free due to being injured & not being able to use the gym which she was still paying for, due to their mistake?

Again, going on my gym & the ones i've been a member of in the past, they've never let me on any equipment until i've had the normally two part inductions, except the time I returned & they asked if I wanted to run through it all. Morally any gym instructor should want to make sure their members are using the equipment safetly & are happy & confident, even if their job doesn't demand that of them.

For example, not helping can result in injury as we've seen, the customer leaving for a better gym, all sorts. It's not good for the gym to at least not say when an induction can be booked in, after being asked. Also, surely it's part of an instructors job to make sure it's all safe & to be on hand? Where i've been they've done inductions & been there to help out & for safety. We were always told have a spotter for the huge weights (The nasty free weights the guys use), to warm up, not do classes beyond our level, not use weights that are way to heavy, have an induction etc

Shouldn't *any* injury, however slight (And this sounds pretty significant) be recorded in a first aid book? I was a first aider at Asda & we have to record it all. Lifting weights *is* great for weight loss, it won't build bulky muscle as guys do & the more muscle we have the faster the weight comes off as the muscle is what burns off fat. If i'd asked a few times for help & was ignored, or told to use the diagrams, i'd probably try myself.

Partly cause if i'd took time out to go to the gym & had the hour there, i'd want to make use of it, partly cause i'd not want to ask even more times cause i'm bad enough even asking guys things once lol & also because i'd have been given advice from a qualified instructor on what to do! Why doubt what they say?

OP I hope you went to your GP & got help & are feeling better by now.
