David Lloyd caused injury

A week or so I went back to my gym after a little while of slacking off, and since I was a bit rusty I decided to ask for some help. I'd never used the weights machines before so one of the young personal trainers said he'd help me for a little bit.
Anyway, when we got to the weights, he just said to lift as much as I possibly could, which I did. He then left me to work out how to use the others on my own, and when I said I'd probably need some help or a demonstration, he just said to follow the diagrams on the side of the machines. Now I've always been a better learner by demonstration and I don't know if I may have done something wrong as though I asked for help I was pretty much left to my own devices.
I now have an excruciating shoulder injury that has been around for well over a week, it's making it impossible to sleep properly and I certainly can't go back to the gym and it's not getting any better. I know it's not just muscle strain from not working out for a while because it's far, far more painful than that. On reflection, surely I should have had somebody give me a proper induction and help me discover which machines were right for me and how much someone of my build should be lifting?
What I'm wondering is, is there any point in complaining? Maybe asking for my last month's membership fee back, or I don't know, just something? I just feel angry that I was so determined to start getting fit and now I'm sitting at home because somebody couldn't be bothered to help me properly.
Any input or advice would really be appreciated.

Yeh Id sue for millions, absolute millions, maybe even billions.couldn't be bothered to help me properly.
And you couldnt be bothered to ensure you knew how to use them.
Im amazed that you think you should be entitled for something, when YOU not david lloyd (as you put it!) caused yourself the injury.
Its people like you that cause our insurance premiums and taxes to go up, you want compensation for absolutely anything0 -
Idiots like you are why this country is a joke
David Lloyd didnt cause injury, you did because you didnt learn properly
You pay for use of their facilities, not for them to hold your hand everytime your in0 -
Yes agree with above post. The onus is on YOU not the gym/instructors to make sure you know how to use the equipment properly. Think you need to give it time for the shoulder to settle - sounds like a severe muscle injury as if you had broken something, you wouldnt have been able to tolerate any movement of your arm over the last week.0

did you not get an induction when you first joined the gym, if you were a new member I would agree that you should have been shown how to use the machines.
but as you said you went back after awhile, so no I don't think the staff can be held responsible for your injury.0 -

Claims Direct........Claims Direct.
I'm sure your sex life is ruined and you can't face the outdoors anymore.
Mind you, I could be wrong and you're just a no-good beatnik chancer.....?You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky
Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -
Sorry to hear about your injury. Has your doctor given you anything for it?
I don't feel the need to be rude even though I disagree with you if you feel you may deserve some form of compensation.
In my opinion, you should only use equipment you know how to use so if he didn't show you and you thought you'd be using it incorrectly, then you shouldn't have used it. If you used it correctly and still got injured then, what can you do? Plus, he probably can't tell you how much to lift because people with the same body type can lift all sorts of weights. You can only be the judge of what you're comfortable with by trying weights. I assume you weren't knowingly pushing yourself so hard it hurt at the time so he may not have been able to judge anyway.
If you're only looking to get fit, then basic exercise and minimal weight use (repetitions on very comfortable amounts to simply tone) is more than sufficient. After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.0 -

Same question-most gyms insist on induction for their own insurance (I always assumed),really cant work out what went amiss here. Sorry, but you wouldnt get into a car if you couldnt drive..would you?0

Thanks for the posts. I only asked as I'd been speaking to family and friends and they were 50/50 on whether I should say anything or not.
I don't know why, but I never got given a proper induction, I've asked for one a lot of times and I've never been given one because they've always had one reason or another, I've tried to book one in but when that happened the person didn't turn up. I thought I was using the machines correctly at the time but I've obviously done something which I didn't realise because I was left to my own devices.
Anyway, I've decided there's not much point in saying anything, I'm not an idiot who's trying to rip them off and I'm not a chancer demanding compensation, I was just looking for advice on what I should do, more to the point if I should do anything at all.2008 wins: £5615 2009 wins: £2832 2010 wins: £1265 2011 wins: £1888 2012 wins: £1000 spa voucher0 -
To be fair to the OP, without being rude to anyone else, he REALLY shouldn't have been left to his own devices on machines He'd never used before!
The Instructor has duty of care to ensure that he had been inducted on these machines & by his own admission, he asked for help as he hadn't used them before. The Instructor should also not have told him to 'lift as much as he could', he should have started low & worked up in increments until reaching the desired weight.
It seems to me that the OP should have spoken out more & ensured the Instructor gave him proper tutilage AND that the Instructor should have ensured that the OP was confident in the use of the equipment before leaving him on his own.
My suggestion would be to inform the Gym of your injury & the reason as to how it came about and ask if they might - as a gesture of good will - give him a couple of free One on One sessions with a Personal Trainer, to ensure he has completely grasped how to use the machines.
I would not be asking for financial recompense, as you have to take responsibility for some of this yourself - if you weren't confident, you should have spoken out.
