Landlord not protected deposit, advice needed.

Good luck Tashydodah - sounds like he's a bullying creep - speak to your local Citizens Advice Bureau and also call Dawn Legal Advice (seach on Google?). They will help you out for free. He will prob benefit from a) getting a call from his mortage company asking him all sorts of questions and b) the Tax Man, also asking lots of awkward questions. It is exactly these kinds of landlords that the Tenant Deposit Scheme was set up to stamp into extinction. Make sure that your next landlord is above board and take care of yourself - let us all know how it's going!MFW #185

Write to the mortgage company being all dippy along the lines - I can't contact my landlord and his address isn't on the land registry but it says you're the mortgage company can you contact him and ask him to send me his address....0 -
Thanks EagerLearner, I'll google Dawn Legal Advice. I've seen he's advertising more of the flats in this building, I feel so sick at the thought of him doing this to more tenants.
Thanks barnaby-bear, I'll write the letter a bit later - do feel weird about it, kinda paranoid he'll confront me about it, but might get me the address! Plus might get him into trouble too lol.0 -
This guy's clearly a shark you can either run and cut your loses and forget about it.... or you will have to confront him - insist on paying rent into a bank account or posting acheque (something traceable) etc... to be honest it sounds like there may be issues with getting deposit back.... it sounds awful situation. sometimes it can be better to write-off some money for piece of mind or if a battle is too big to be worth fighting....tashydodah wrote: »Thanks EagerLearner, I'll google Dawn Legal Advice. That's harassment & a serious criminal offence. If it ever happens again, call the police immediately. Don't mention anything about it being your landlord, say (in a terrified voice) that there are a couple of men outside, hammering on the door & shouting threats. That you're on your own & terrified, ideally cry a bit down the phone.tashydodah wrote: »I dont want to NOT pay the rent because the last time I did that (not my fault because the landlord hadnt contacted me for about 6 weeks or advised me on how to pay the rent) him and his dad turned up banging on my door demanding the rent in cash there and then using bullying tactics. I'm 22, female and on my own so that really upset me. He's around alot and nobody else is living in the building so most of the time I dont feel safe.
Then when the rozzers turn up they can deal with LL & daddy. The fuzz themselves may need reminded of Section 48, 1987 Landlord & Tenant Act, though so best remember that bit."Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.0 -

I cant run and forget about it. I have to show him that he cant get away with treating people this way. I was a perfectly good tenant, paying for carpets, decorating, very patient etc. I didnt know landlords like this were out there TBH and if I can stop him from doing this to people in the future I will. Plus it'd be nice to have the money back I paid for the carpets, paint, lino etc. I'll fight if I can. I know he wont give me the deposit back because I tried to get out of the contract before because of everything he hadnt done, he agreed to me leaving but wouldnt provide me with written confirmation of this, he told me I couldnt get the deposit back until he got an electrician to check the electrics - uh, im not responsible for the electrics? Anyway I ended up staying. He's totally just trying to do me over.Guy_Montag wrote: »That's harassment & a serious criminal offence. If it ever happens again, call the police immediately. I would do that but we've agreed he'll come to the house for the rent, although I did tell him id prefer to put it into an account. The rent was due on the first of this month, we agreed last time that he'd come the same time next month and hes not shown up, I even sent him a text yesterday saying we needed to arrange a time and date because it's not fair for him to turn up whenever he feels like it - especially as I dont want to have that amount of cash on me all the time!0 -
Does anyone know about damp in the property? Its going all black and mouldy behind my bed board - theres a big gap between the wall and bed so its not because of that, the entire wall is covered in crap and I've got glandular fever at the moment - dont want anything making me worse. I read somehwere it was against basic living standards or something, basically I just need to go to CAB?

Council's usually have an officer for standards in private rentals who may be able to advise - they may have methods to pursue landlord's whereabouts and certainly he won't like authorities poking around - they are also pretty hot on dodgy contracts/laack of rent books - this type of thing was supposed to be stamped out with Rackmantashydodah wrote: »Does anyone know about damp in the property? Ok thanks. He came round knocking on my door early this morning (obviously wanting the rent) but I wasnt even dressed so didnt answer the door. I've asked him more than once to arrange a time and date with me and not just turn up!

Tell him you were the victim of an attempted mugging near home and are too scared to carry cash/keep it in the house so will only send it by bank transfer or cheque from now on.0
