Connecting Broadband to PC Upstairs Without a Phone Point

You need filters on every phone point.
Don't forget Sky if that is connected too.
try moving the computer to the main phone point and connecting it there.
Do you get any lights on the ADSL modem at all?
BTW have you had notification that ADSL is live? I may have missed this above.:think:0 -
I have some more detail on the phone setup and would be grateful for any advice.
The main BT point is in the dining room and it is a single point. It has a double adaptor so that the phone can be plugged into one socket and the phone extension into the other socket.
Q1: How do I set up the microfilter here?
Use a filter between the phone and the socket doubler. Assuming that the phone extension goes upstairs and this is the only cable going upstairs, DON'T filter the extension.
There is a telephone extension point in the kitchen.
Q2: I'm guessing here that the microfilter plugs direct into the phone socket with the phone connecting to the microfilter?
Yes filter the phone.
There is another telephone extension point in the master bedroom.
Where does this get it's feed from? Is this extension point hard wired to the main master socket or fed from the extension cable? If there is a phone in this socket, it needs filtering.
There is an extension lead plugged into this point which then goes under the carpet and into the spare bedroom with a socket on the end which was used to connect the old dial-up modem.
Q3: Do I still connect the filter as discussed above or does it have to be connected directly into the phone socket. If the latter then the ethernet cable will not reach the PC in the other room
The line input cable to the router/modem (supplied with it) must NOT be plugged into a filtered extension. If want to be able to use the dial up modem as a back up, it must be connected via a filter.
Any help appreciated, this is doing my head in !!
No phumph yet then!

I managed to get my laptop working both by wireless and by connecting direct to the router so the line and router are fine it's trying to get it to connect upstairs.0 -

So it sounds like it can't be done then? The line input cable to the router is not long enough to reach the socket in the master bedroom.0 -

What I am saying is that if you need to use an extension lead from the socket in the bedroom to the spare room, the ADSL filter needs to go at the modem/router end, assuming that you want the modem/router next to the PC.

Hi,
The problems with an extension cable is that it may not be wired correctly so ISP's won't support any problem that can't be replicated by plugging into the main phone socket.
Your wiring should be :
Computer
Router
filter - extension cable
main socket.
If the laptop works
laptop ---- router ---- filter - mainsocket
but not :
laptop
Router
filter - extension cable
main socket.
There may be a problem with the cable itself but I'm not entirely sure what the wires all do.
You know I nearly reaced over to pull the filter out to look at it then, doh!!:think:0 -
What I am saying is that if you need to use an extension lead from the socket in the bedroom to the spare room, the ADSL filter needs to go at the modem/router end, assuming that you want the modem/router next to the PC.
So basically if I was still using dial up I would plug the modem from the PC into the extension lead socket.
As I want to use broadband I need to put the microfilter into the extension lead socket and then the ethernet cable from the PC into the filter?0 -

No a modem must be plugged into an ADSL filter just like any other telephony device on an ADSL enabled line.
As I want to use broadband I need to put the microfilter into the extension lead socket and then the ethernet cable from the PC into the filter?
You are getting confused about these cables. It is not an Ethernet cable that goes between the modem/router and the ADSL filter, you use the line in cable supplied with the modem/router. The Ethernet cable is connected between the modem/router and the PC.
If a phone works on this extension (dial tone) then when you connect your modem/router to it you should get the ADSL light illuminated. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Perhaps you could show the phone sockets and how they are connected together, just using words as post #17.
Master
Kitchen
Bedroom
and what you have plugged into them? e.g. ADSL filters, phones, modem etc. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Sorry I've not replied but been busy this week viewing houses and finally had an offer accepted yesterday.
I'll try and give more detail when i can but basically I couldn't get it to work other than purchasing a new usb wireless adaptor.0
