Speedo and odometre could fail at any time as could the brake lights.
It is an offence for anyone to sell a car that is unroadworthy and no brake lights would certainly fall under that bracket. The problem is proving that he sold it like that and that the fault didn't occur after the sale.
As for the MOT, they are only good for the day it was issued nothing more I'm afriad.0 -
