You have no business opening someone else's mail.
DVLA mail says do not return to sender on it! As its government mail - or that's at least what they tell us in work!

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
Firstly it is not an offence to open any mail addressed to another person if it is delivered and addressed to your address. It is an offence to open mail for the purposes of gaining some pecuniary advantage - ie opening the mail and finding a debit card and using that debit card or with the intent to steal or deprive.
Secondly if you do not open the mail that persons initial offence will escalate into a fine, a hearing for non-payment and a visit from a bailiff. Do you really want to argue with a bailiff who doesn't believe that you are not the offender? This is something they hear all the time. And a large proportion of bailiffs are thugs or will coerce your family into giving them entry.
This is why you must open the mail and prevent the situation from escalating into something that will involve you and give you a lot of headaches, stress and disbelief at our wonderful system. How do I know? Been there got the badge and the headache. The man without a signature.0 -

Yes, I entirely agree with this - thats why I open post that is addressed to my house but doesn't have my name on it.
As far as I'm concerned, if someone gets their post sent to my house they consent to me opening it - if they dont agree they can send it somewhere else!0 -

I think that would be for the Post Office to worry about, not me.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Well, whilst I don't disagree with what you're saying, someone else's offence is no concern of mine, and yes - I'd probably quite enjoy telling a bailiff where to go. However, I live on my own, so nobody else would be affected. I can understand that it wouldn't suit everyone.

Actually, I can't understand how this sort of situation can have caused you any grief at all?
Bailiff: "Are you Jimmy Jones?"
Me: "No."
Bailiff: "Got any ID?"
Me: "Yup. There ya go. Have a nice day."
Bailiff: "Thanks very much. Cheerio."

Yes, and if you're not in they will break into your house (assisted by the police) and take your stuff, no questions asked.0 -
