Has someone registered their car to my address?

I have been receiving letters at my house that are addressed to a person I've never heard of regarding a NIP for being caught in a speed camera.
Presumably the police have used to DVLA database to get the address of this person so I can only assume that this person has registered their car to my address - is this possible or could the police have made some sort of mistake?
Secondly, if this person has registered their car to my address how to I go about getting it un-registered - I assume the DVLA wont want to speak to me about this car due to "data protection" etc. I tried calling the DVLA today but it seems they are on strike.
Has anyone ever had the same thing happen to them?

I wouldn't shout so loudly about opening mail addressed to other people; it's an offence apparently. You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky
Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -
Yes but when I receive mail to my house and I don't recognise the name I always have a look incase they have stolen my identity and it is some communication from a credit card company etc. Plus, there was no return address.0

Where did the OP say they were opening them? Just said "receiving letters at my house that are addressed to a person I've never heard of"
I guess you could assume they are by the fact they know what it's concerning but I imagine it's got DVLA or something on it and the OP may know what a speeding fine looks like!
Anyway to answer OP, I'd just either ignore them or carry on trying to contact the DVLA to let them know, or just put not known at this address on it and wack it back in post.
EDIT: Ignore me, they just admitted itbut yeh it is a crime, OP if they were stealing your identity they would have your name on them!

write to DVLA enclosing a copy of the letter asking them to erase your details, also speak to your local policeI

The thing is, I'm not sure how this could have happened. When you change the address your car is registered to you have to send off your v5 and then the new one gets posted back to the new address. As far as I know we haven't seen a v5 for the car in question so is it possible it is actually the police that have made a mistake.0

Where is it stated to be an offence if the address is correct?0 -
OP to get the address removed and to receive a confirmation letter back write to:
BC1
DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1ZA
You will need to quote the reg mark, your name and address, explain that you are receiving fine/s for vehicle you don't own and request confirmation that the address is removed.
You should get confirmation within 4 weeks. Also write to the police stating that you have no knowledge of the vehicle. They may want copy of the letter you get back from DVLA, sent them a photocopy and keep the original.

Great advice, thanks!0 -
If I get a letter with someone else's name on, I cross it through, write "not at this address" across the envelope and drop it back in a letter box. I thought everyone else did the same, but apparently not.
You have no business opening someone else's mail.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

We must be out of the same mould; the only difference is I write "not known at this address" and back into the postal system it goes.......
Still, standards change, I guess we're old fashioned......You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky
