    hahaha - awww.. :p

well I have 2 rabbits and 2 guinea pigs, and they are so cute! the rabbits are hard to tame though, whereas the guinea pigs are much easier to handle and they don't kick like rabbits.

then again if your little one is 2 yrs old, she will probably get the rabbit tame quickly by the fact that she will want to hold and stroke it 24/7 :rotfl:

also, one thing to bear in mind is that they are sociable animals and should have at least another rabbit for company..

can you not convince her to get a hamster for starter, and see how she gets on? easier to hide than a rabbit, and if she gets on ok with the hamster you can get a rabbit?

not trying to put you off, just a couple of thoughts :)

We are soon to let out our house, and to be honest I wouldn't mind if the tenants want pets within reason (not some wierdo with 29 monkeys or anything - there was a rented cottage near us with a tenant who had all those sorts of things, and the LL had to have the place fumigated when she left:eek: .

It is our family home, and WE have always had pets, so what's the difference? Good luck! Take care though with your little one if you get a rabbit, as they can bite and give a nasty scratch. Guinea pigs are better for kids to be honest, and rats are brilliant as well. Hamsters are ok, but tend to make a noise at night and be asleep in the daytime when the kids want to play with them. (I used to be an animal care lecturer).

Landlords do not specify 'No pets' without reason.

However, the OFT consider the term 'No pets' as unreasonable as it would stop the tenant from owning a goldfish. A rabbit might be considered more damaging than a goldfish so you should get the LL's consent unless you do not mind moving on when your tenancy ends.

You agreed to the clause, after all.

Here is a quote from the letlink website (linky)
Terms restricting a tenant’s use of a property should be reasonable in relation to the type and location of the property. Other examples of unreasonable prohibitions include terms against keeping pets. Such a term has been considered unfair under comparable legislation in another EU state because it could prevent a tenant from keeping a goldfish. A term prohibiting the keeping of pets that could harm the property or be a nuisance to other residents would be unlikely to meet the same objection.

If the property is suitable, I would not object to you owning a rabbit providing it was kept outside. I would consider asking for an additional deposit of £150.

Rabbits poo and can smell. Kids get bored with them and they become a burden on you. It is better to let her enjoy her friends' bunnies IMHO.

If you get one, call him Stu.

Landlords do not specify 'No pets' without reason.

Our landlord said it was just in the letting agents standard contract and he didn't mind (it may have helped that he already knew we kept the house really clean)

Also my dog is much more house trained than alot of students who our LL would have had as tenants before us! :)

My daughter has rats and they are fabulous little things - she has 3 for company as they are very sociable. She has girls so they are very curious and like to explore, apparently males are more relaxed and sleepy.

I find that they can smell - I would like my daughter to clean them out every 5 days but she wants to do it every 7. .

They are easily tamed with handling and unlike hamsters, rarely bite. I've never been bitten by the rats (although they do sometimes test my finger) but have taken a few bites from hamsters (who are short sighted and grumpy sometimes :p) However, they really need to be handled every day and have time to 'free range' in a safe room. Hamsters (syrian at least) must be kept singly and I never felt too guilty leaving them in their cage for a couple of days although the more they handled the friendlier they are plus I think it's nice for them to have other experiences rather than just their cage.

I have had rabbits before but to be honest they pretty much kept to themselves and kicked when handled - when I was younger that put me off them so we had a strictly viewing only relationship!! They did keep the lawn looking good though :D

Good luck and I hope the landlord gives permission :)

  • HI there
Ive just sorted out a house to rent for me and my partner. Ive made sure that they are fully aware that we have a dog and they are fine about it.

Def tell the landlord about it and get their permission. I cant see it being a problem.

Can I also direct you to a rescue site which has rabbits and other small furries seeking new homes....
Go to the "other animals needing homes" section on the forum (its a dog site) https://www.dogspages.org.uk

    Good luck !!

P.s I kept rats for years and found them to be very friendly and inteligent. Not grumpy or nippy like hamsters. Just incase you wanted something smaller to start off!
