Unlocking Your Phone Abroad

I'm currently living in the Republic Of Ireland and have a mobile account with Orange in the UK. I only go back to the UK 2/3 times a year so I want to unlock my phone while I am out of the country.
Will the free unlocking codes (or indeed any codes) work or do I need to be in the UK.

If the phone is a nokia then most of their models (except some of the newest ones) can be unlocked using the links in the top post in this mobile forum. All phones can be unlocked to take another providers sims card, however, some cannot be unlocked by code generating software (motorola) and these can only be unlocked by either someone with the right equipment (some market staff and phone shops have this) or by getting the code from the network it is locked to. Most networks will charge around £20-£25 for this, however; I have heard of others (3) who charge over £100.

As long as you know the network that the phone was locked to, it can definitely be unlocked anywhere in the world that's capable of doing the unlocking (be it by code or cable)
