Help setting up wireless router for Tiscali

Have got my son a new Dell desktop for his birthday this week, that I have set up in his bedroom.

We have a PC downstairs that is on Tiscali via a SAGEM modem.

I have received a wireless router from Tiscali that I want to use so that both PC's can access the internet but, I'm not quite sure what to do!

Not sure if it's relevant but his new PC has Vista operating system - ours has XP.

I have received an installation CD from Tiscali that says must be inserted into machine before modem is connected but won't this just be for new accounts?

Do I need to install this on his PC and re-install on ours?

Anything else that may help!!

If your own PC is wired into the current router all you should need to do is plug the new one in and restart the pc.

Once you have your own PC working switch your sons on and Vista should automatically search for a wireless signal and find yours. You may be asked for the userid and password then that should be you done.

I would only install the supplied software as a last resort if it doesn't work without it as it's not usually needed.

Have messed around with it now for a while and still cannot work it out.

I'd rather not call the expensive Technical 0871 line.

What exactly am I plugging the wireless router into, as on the back of the Sagem external modem, there is only a slot for line in (from telephone socket filter) and another for USB connection to PC.

On the back of the wireless router, there is an input for ADSL, then 4 others for LAN.

Help, I'm under pressure from a 10 year old son!!!

Make and model of the new wireless router?

Basically you have to replace the modem with the router which will need configuring by entering something like 192.168.1.1 into your browser. Should all be explained in the user manual. No need to install any software for this.

The line from the phone socket (via a filter) goes into the ADSL line.

You'll have to go into the new routers settings and set up the username and password for your account, probably. Best to read the manual to find how to do this.

Then you can plug as many computers as you like in the other ports on the back of the new router with ethernet cable. (I guess that's what you want to do with the old desktop.) They should be able to use the internet automatically if the username and password is set correctly.

And if you want to connect the new desktop wirelessly, you'll have to go in the router's settings, set up a wireless ID and security, and then input the same information into the new desktop.

    Good luck

There isn't a user manual in the box, that's adding to my struggle.

The router is a Siemens Gigaset SE587 WLAN.

    Help!

Unfortunately the Siemens Website doesn't have the manual for that model.

However the general procedure for Siemens Gigaset's is:

Make sure a computer is plugged into one of the ethernet ports on the back.
With that computer, open up a web browser and type 192.168.1.1 where the address would normally go, hit enter.
The default password to access the settings is "admin"

I've put the Tiscali installation CD in for the router. It has run a check on my system but tells me that there isn't an ethernet adapter and that it can't complete installation.

    What is this?

No need to run any Ticali crap on your PC!

You need an Ethernet port like this:

If you haven't got one you will need to fit an Ethernet card:

I have got 2 ports on the back of the old desktop like but both appear to only be for the phone.

There isn't anywhere that I can plug the larger yellow ethernet cable socket into.

How much does an ethernet card cost, and is it easy to put in yourself?

Isn't there an ethernet to USB adaptor that would work?

Called my local independent computer store where an ethernet card is £10.50 and USB to ethernet socket is £15.
