In the current circumstances, the government realise that, if they allowed a UK bank to go to the wall, or let its customers lose their savings, they would lose the next election, since 'middle england' would not forgive this. Their reactions with Northern Rock underlined their philosophy, so I would hazard a guess that UK banks are a pretty safe bet for your money.0
