TM contract expiring on 18/04/08

Hi, I have an T-Mobile Flext 35 Web n Walk 18 month contract that expires on 18/04/08. I am currently paying £37.49 per month.

I have a TM Nokia e61 with co-pilot that came with the contract.

I am considering moving to a new service provider as I do not use up all my allowance each month. I rarely use the web n Walk function. It is the sat nav that I use frequently. I use around 75-100 mins talking and about 30 texts per month.

I am happy with the phone and would consider keeping it (it is T Mobile branded, so I assume it is locked to them) and using a cheaper service provider.

However I love new gadgets, the Nokia N95 has the GPS receiver inbuilt (my current sat nav has a separate receiver) to so having it all in one package is attractive. The co-pilot s/w is portable to a new phone at no charge.

Sorry for the long preamble, but here are the questions.

1 What date should I contact TM if I am going to leave them?
2 Can anyone recommend a good deal and or service provider given the above?
3 Will TM automatically renew my contract for another 18months if I do not do anything after my current contract expires?
4 What are the pros & cons of buying my own phone and getting a pay as you go sim card?
5 I am assuming that I will be able to take my current number with me?
Many thanks in advance for any help and guidance, it will be appreciated.

  • I can answer the easy bits!

Will TM automatically renew my contract for another 18months if I do not do anything after my current contract expires? - No, you'll be out of contract and can leave with 30 days notice at any time.

I am assuming that I will be able to take my current number with me? - Yep, request your PAC (you'll need to be out of contract/giving your notice) and you can take your number wherever you want to go.

What are the pros & cons of buying my own phone and getting a pay as you go sim card? - Pros: you get a nice unbranded unlocked handset that can be used on any network. Cons: you'll miss out on some useful apps that 3 and some others give you on the handet, unlocked sim free handsets are expensive, you won't be able to take out the network's insurance (I believe) for the handset.

I'm not sure if T-mobile is 18 mths + 30 days notice, or if the last month counts as the 30 days if you give the notice1 month prior to contract expiring.
If this has been of any use please click on THANKS, it makes me look good.

Why don't you knock down your service plan to something more suitable? They'll no-doubt offer you AT LEAST £10 a month off for your custom over the last 18 months... or alternatively give you a good deal on the N95 (though in my opinion this is a hugely overrated and overpriced phone; the N96 blows it away, and for what I want, the E51 is fantastic - as I use a real camera to take pictures and have a bluetooth GPS module that lives in the car!)

When you ask for a PAC negotiate on the deal they are giving you - the discount will be based on your spend over the last year and £42.50 a month is chunky - so they will be willing to renew you onto a low value priceplan (say Flext 20) and maybe chuck in free weekends and N95 on the cheap too... just try them!
The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster! :)

Sid, Many thanks for the info, did not know of the impending N96. looks as if it might be out later this year. So will just hang onto the e61 and get a month by month contract until the N96 is shipping.

Hey, if you want your PAC they will give you it free of charge on the very final day of your contract. Otherwise, you can call up from 30 days beforehand.
I accept no liability if you chose to rely on my advice.
