Mobile phone provider lied to me

I got a new contract phone last year the women in the shop at the time said that i would be on a 12 month contract, she gave me a piece of paper with 18 months listed on it and after the 12th month crossed all the other ones off, and next to 12 months wrote upgrade, so assumed that this would be when I could upgrade my phone.
When I went into the shop about upgrading my phone, after the 12 months, they said that i was on an 18 month contract and so had to wait.
When I signed my contract i noticed that it said 18 months, but she said don't worry the contract's only for 12, my son was in the shop with me at the time, so is there any thing that I can do to get of this contract?
