Due to Laws in France most family rooms are for 3 people only if it apperes for more I would double check as I have not found one yet for more than 3!

We stayed in one last year in Toulouse. I think it was a Novotel so you can get rooms for 4 ok.

  • There are simply loads of cheap hotels in that area. We like Campanile hotels - great buffets. http://www.campanile.com/en/default.aspx

The Campanile, Kyriad, Premiere Classe, Formule 1, Etap and Ibis all take only 3 per room. There's no Novotel.

Now I've done a bit of searching for our own holiday later this year, I've found out that the Mercure (undergoing refurbishment and previously the George V), Suitehotel, B&B and Cottage appear the only hotel chains in Calais at least to take 4 in a room.

I know this was recommeded above but 4 of us have stayed in the Suitehotel and can definately recommend it. It was excellent for families. The rooms were very innovative. It's right next to Cite Europe very close to the tunnel.

When we went last year my BiL and his family stayed in the bonsai and we stayed in the formule1.
We arrived late at night and they just went straight in and had someone on the desk whereas we spent an hour and a half trying to figure out how to get the security gate open. The instructions are ok until you have to verify it by card- when you're tired and it's 3 in the morning with noone to ask it's really frustrating.
Either way it's easy enough to sneak an extra child in. Then have 1 adult and 2 kids in the double bed and have the driver in the bunk for a good nights sleep.
Personally I said I'd never do it again and this year we are getting a late night tunnel crossing and driving through the night.
We can take it at our own pace.

  • I can only agree that the SuiteHotel is excellent. Avoid the Bonsai like the plague. Formule 1, Etap and Ibis are in-between and usually OK except you won't find a private bathroom in Formule 1. Prices put the UK to shame as well.

Thanks to everyone for your great advice . I looked at the various suggestions and coupled with tripadvisor and my limited budget , have now booked Hotel b-b at Coquelles Calais. The big selling point was the mezzanine area seperating the kids from us but not in a seperate room IYSWIM .

Once again thanks for all your help .

Ps- What does Bonsai mean ???

"Bonsai" is the name of a hotel chain in France. They are similar to Etap hotels - very basic, miniature prices, fine for a night.

I passed the new B&B in Calais last night - it's next door to a small retail park and has McDonalds over the road for those who are desperate for food. We are now booking a B&B for our journey to the south of France, to see how they match against the Etap we were planning on staying in, so many thanks to the poster who came up with the mention of this chain.
