getting-sorted-sarah wrote: »Weezl - ta for the bread recipe - you know when something sounds too good to be true.....? Well can you explain why it doesn't need kneading, and also how it is ok to use ordinary rather then strong flour (probably because of the no-kneading...?) and also, finally, what size tins are we talking here - 2lb (800g) or 1lb?
Thank you muchly!
Hi,
I was pretty sceptical too, all the kneading, knocking back, proving etc... was what made me buy a breadmaker, but now I'm a convert to this stuff.:D
Sorry, don't know about 1lb or 2lb tins but i've just measured mine if that helps::o
length 22cm x width 11 cm and height 7 cm all measured on the inside of the tin.
Not sure why it doesn't need kneading, but I've made nearly 30 of 'em now and none have spoiled for the lack of it! It's adapted from 'Grant' loaf, and is an old family recipe of my work pal who grew up in Northumbria.
Again, not sure why it works with plain wholemeal, but once again, it really does!
All I can say is try it, it'll be a 60p experiment you'll not regret!;)

Just made some hot cross bun dough. I'll stick them in the oven in the morning. Maybe do some hobnobs too?
I'm off to bed leaving DH to mash spuds and cook frozen veg.

Sounds brilliant - thanks again, will definitely try it! Those sound like large (2lb, in the old money) loaves. I've been making some lovely white bread, but it does need a lot of upper arm strength, which is fine if you have loads of time and are in the mood, but as a working single mum with an MSE habit to keep up it would be great to have a fast alternative - will let you know how I get on.
I assume you freeze these loaves ok too?
I've just make humous and frozen some of that too - need a bigger freezer!:oHi,

I do freeze it, usually as 3 weeks worth of hummus sandwiches, spooky eh?
Please do report back on how you like it!

1.5 kg bag of wholemeal plain flour- 55p
fresh yeast for free from the bakers!:D
3 tsp salt - .013p (got 500g of salt from lidl for 13p!)
about 2 1/4 pts warm water, add gradually til you get a not too slippy dough.
Mix by hand. No need to knead.(!)
put into 4 greased or lined loaf tins.
Leave in a warm place to rise for 40 ish mins til dough peeks above the top of the tin.
Bake for 25 mins on gas mark 6, or until browned on top and sounds hollow when tapped with a knuckle.
14p a loaf! 77 cals per slice, if you cut 15 slices per loaf.
Enjoy...;)
I have photos of all the stages, but no idea how to insert them! Anyone help?:o
