Vyke, Vodafone and trains

I have recently set up Vyke pro on my mobile (Nokia N70) and have a few questions.

1) Is it the same data cost to access vodafone via 3g as GPRS?
2) Is it best to have always connected?
3) It seems to be charging be a lot for data usage as i commute on the train everyday and therefore have to constantly to reconnect. If it is connected all the time is this cheaper? If it is not possible on the train then i think Vyke is not really ideal for me. For example in one train journey i have been charge approximately 80p in data usage.
4) Vyke does seem to lose connection even when i select always online. It will still be running but with no connection when i select connect it cannot despite there being full signal. To get around this i have to restart Vyke. It is slightly annoying and far from ideal. Would lite be a better option?

look fwd to hearing other peoples ideas or suggestions.

Vodafone do a data add-on for £7.50 AFAIK... that will save you money if you are using it this much.

Different apps use network connections in different ways... and some can gracefully reconnect when a connection is lost, others do not.

  • I thought data use of vyke worked out at 0.7mb per month so there would be no need to pay for data usage fee, as it would work out very cheap. It is really eating up my credit on PAYG

sadly it looks like it isn't for payg: http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatch/Portal/appmanager/vodafone/wrp?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=template10&pageID=MI_0004

their allowance of 120Mb is also paltry compared to other networks (T-mobile and 3 in particular).

Looks like they do cap at £1 a day though that's still pricey if you're travelling more than 7 days a month!

  • I think that Vodafones data cost rates discourage the use of Vyke. Anything between 0.5mb and 15mb costs £1 a day. Anything less is charged per useage. So 40kb cost me about 80p. So u are forced to use more and pay the minimum £1 per day. As otherwise on the rate less than 0.5mb is unproportionately high.

Not good. Do others know the cost on other networks? Maybe worth me getting another sim card.

their charges are not what they seem.

They say between what they call the VYKE ZONE its 4 cents a minute, don't believe it!

45 secs cost me 20p - even at the standard rate of 2p a minute I can't add that one up, and all my calls are like that.

I loaded £10 and they have a policy of no refund! They won't get anymore from me.

Wrote to them about it and 10 days later still no reply.
