cast iron bath, worth anything dead or alive

Options
Hi I have to remove a cast iron bath from the 1st floor, it has roll top edges and feet that are half decent, not the best I have seen but half decent. The people before had it re-coated with something years back and that appears to be flaking.

Would I be able to carry it downstairs if I had help i.e. could 2 blokes move it or does it need more?

Is this bath worth anything complete?

Should I do anything to it to sell it, ie I heard they are worth loads if you get them re-enameled?

Or should I just take it to the scrap metal man?

Are they worth anything different depending whether they are smashed or complete, or is the value the same?

What is the approximate value of a bath in a scarp yard?

Just trying to work out what is best to do with this bath.

Any help appreciated.

I can only tell you two things.
When I was an apprentice I decided to smash a cast iron bath with a sledge hammer. To this day I am still partially deaf in my right ear! It's like hitting a giant bell!!!! If you go down that route wear ear defenders until it has cracked.

When we removed the old bath from my present house, it took three of us to get it down stairs. My top tread is still cracked and now damn well creaks as a result LOL.

  • Very very heavy, too hard to get out, not worth anything either, smashed it up into big heavy bits.

Check the yellow pages if you have a salvage yard near to you.

They would quite happily come round and take the bath off your hands - saves you the trouble of trying to move it!
Treat others as you would like to be treated :A
  • I've heard that cast baths with 'claw feet' are worth a few bob.

Just leave it out over night and the P-ikey Fairies will magically whisk it away.

Not these days, I did one up the road from me and it was gone in 2 hours.
One before that was a bit longer but at least they they knocked on the door before loading up.Personally I think it's too much effort to cash in cast, the weight kills the van.

Depends on the type of cast bath. i give 80 quid for a reclaimed one, though it was a good one, a roll top one with claw feet that was imaculate, that sits in the centre of my bathroom.

But through work i end up stripping a few out and most are not so good, so they get the sledge hammer treatment.incidently when putting the hammer through as well as ear defenders wear goggles as bits of enamel will fly up,and its bye bye eye sight if a bit catches you in the eye.
  • I broke one up with a lump hammer, the hardest work I've done in a while.
  • If it were me i would definetly keep it in one peice and sell it on ebay or Gumtree
put it this way restored baths done up can make £1,000's check out the price of these restored baths
    they fetch £2,200!!!
